JOB SUMMARY

The Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) is currently seeking a Tobacco Enforcement Police Officer to conduct inspections of retail stores and tobacco distributors for compliance with Arizona tobacco tax and regulatory laws. The person in this position plays a vital role by:

· Reviewing allegations, complaints or other information to determine whether a criminal offense may have been committed.

· Developing and implementing investigations and intelligence-gathering operational plans.

· Conducting investigations of smuggling, theft, fraud, tax evasion, conspiracy and violations of Arizona tobacco tax and regulatory law.

· Making seizures of contraband and/or counterfeit tobacco products and stamps.

· Conducting interviews and surveillance, reviewing records and inspecting inventories.

· Executing search warrants.

· Reviewing and analyzing complex documents and records.

· Collecting and preserving evidence.

· Conducting and interpreting complex computer data searches.

· Utilizing cameras, recorders, computers, and other surveillance equipment.

· Handling/using a firearm.

· Preparing written documents, reports of daily activity and detailed investigative reports.

· Testifying before courts, at administrative hearings, and/or in depositions.

· Conferring with prosecuting attorneys regarding progress of investigations, quality of case files and evidence, drafts of subpoenas, warrants, etc.

· Establishing professional working relationships with local, state, federal and tribal enforcement agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have 2 years of experience conducting increasingly complex criminal investigations, which include participation in all three stages of the criminal justice system (investigation, law enforcement and prosecution). A college degree in Criminal Justice or Police Science will substitute for a portion of the required experience. The candidate is required to hold and maintain ACTIVE Full Authority Peace Officer Certification as mandated by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST).

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

Selected candidate will be required to:

  • Undergo a criminal history investigation.
  • Undergo a tax filing history check.
  • Undergo a post-offer medical/physical examination.
  • Possess and retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to a driver’s license record check, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).
