Sheriff's Control Room Security Monitor and Dispatcher

The Prince William County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a qualified applicant to fill the full-time position of Control Room Security Monitor and Dispatcher. The Sheriff’s Office is a state accredited agency that offers great benefits, competitive salary, VRS retirement, and a 40 hour work week. This position is subject to the following: criminal and credit history check, education and license verification check, fingerprinting, and a polygraph examination.

PREFERENCES:
Training in NCIC/VCIN terminal operation and basic dispatching.

STARTING SALARY RANGE: $34,840.00 – $46,987.20

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs responsible technical work dispatching information via radio, telephone, and teletype to sheriff’s road units and courtroom security in response to vital information of prisoners; emergency situations involving transportation of prisoners from Adult Detention to the court room; monitoring video control station; tracking prisoner in the courthouse or prisoner transports; and monitoring the security system to maintain safety of inmates and personnel.

Work is performed under regular supervision of the Sheriff’s Sergeant.

TYPICAL TASKS:
Dispatches and receives information via sheriff deputy’s radio and telephone to road units and courtroom security deputies;

Maintains control of all radio traffic and monitoring of prisoner activities on closed circuit screens simultaneously;

Monitors radio traffic for both road and courthouse systems logging important transmissions to ensure the safety of the sheriff deputies;

Operates controls for inside and outside steel doors and sallyport for entrance and exits;

Keeps record log of prisoners movements to and from the Adult Detention Center and within the Judicial Center;

Assures through video security monitors that all prisoners are accounted for while in the custody of the Sheriff’s Department;

Observe deputies while prisoners are in their custody so that incidents may be reported in a timely manner and to alert other deputies in emergency situations;

Maintains both active and inactive teletype files;

Maintains the Virginia Criminal Information Center (NCIC) Teletype manual;

Operates Teletype computer terminal to run checks for vehicle registration; property liens; or criminal background checks to provide road units with vital and timely information, utilizing the VCIN/NCIC Information System;

Check all alarms within the courtrooms in the Judicial Center on a daily basis; reset and advise deputies that they are operating properly;

Assist in the maintenance of departmental records including preparing monthly mileage reports for the Sheriff’s Office vehicles; filing log reports, teletypes and other related reports and correspondence.

Advises supervisors of all emergency situations and the nature of the incident; and make contact with appropriate personnel.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of methods of operating a base station radio; general knowledge of the methods and operation of teletype computer terminal and operations video control station; general knowledge of the methods and operations, policies and procedures of the NCIC/VCIN Information Systems; ability to monitor eight security screens simultaneously; some knowledge of county security policies and procedures, and the courtroom schedules; some knowledge of operating a two-way radio, receiving and dispatching vital information in a timely manner; some knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings; ability to operate standard office equipment; ability to observe prisoner’s movements while operating the base radio, recording log information and responding to teletype request; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and county employees; ability to understand follow directions; ability to perform dual functions and maintain composure.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduate and 1-2 two years experience monitoring video security systems and operating two-way radio systems; prefer training in NCIC/VCIN terminal operation and basic dispatching.
