Server Systems Administrator II or **Server Systems Administrator III

The Server Systems Administrator II is responsible for the administration, monitoring, configuration, and maintenance of Montana State University’s central Linux computing environment and related infrastructure services. This position reports to the Manager of Systems Administration and supports enterprise services to the MSU four-campus environment and the Office of the Commissioner for Higher Education; ensures the reliability, security, and maximum performance of systems in support of teaching, learning, research, and administrative activities. The position may work extended hours as required, and will also be on-call periodically to respond to emergency situations at all hours of the day and night.

The Server Systems Administrator III is the senior technical position responsible for systems architecture and planning, leading design efforts, and overall technical management of Montana State University’s central Linux computing environment and related infrastructure services. This position reports to the Manager of Systems Administration and supports enterprise services to the MSU four-campus environment and the Office of the Commissioner for Higher Education; ensures the reliability, security, and maximum performance of systems in support of teaching, learning, research, and administrative activities. The position may work extended hours as required, and will also be on-call periodically to respond to emergency situations at all hours of the day and night.

Duties and Responsibilities

Server Systems Administrator II

Performs intermediate to advanced operational support involving configuration, monitoring, maintenance and server systems repair.

Ensures high availability and acceptable levels of performance of mission critical enterprise systems working with first level support in timely and effective incident resolution.

Performs system firmware/software upgrades, and hardware lifecycle replacement of servers and storage systems.

Configures, implements, and manages ongoing operations of enterprise SAN / NAS hardware and software in accordance with standards and operational requirements.

Maintains security and protects systems from unauthorized use in accordance with standards and operational requirements.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Server Systems Administrator III

Provides senior level technical expertise and in support of MSU’s Linux systems environment and related infrastructure services; responsible for leading technical design and implementation efforts assuring the highest level of performance and recoverability assurances for mission critical systems.

Assists the Manager of Systems Administration in establishing guidelines and procedures in the management and installation of host computer systems, storage arrays, fiber channel/iSCSI SANS , backup libraries, and related infrastructure.

Performs advanced level troubleshooting; leading problem solving efforts involving internal and external support personnel and organizations.

Leads technical teams in the ongoing development and enhancement of system performance and monitoring support methodologies, procedures, and programs.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Server Systems Administrator II

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or other related field, or an equivalent combination of education and applicable experience.

Demonstrated experience using the Linux operating system, DNS & DHCP , syslog, security concepts including firewall and server hardening configurations, virtual technologies, converged and hyper-converged platforms, storage area networks, authentication management, enterprise scale server and network architectures, IT best practices to include incident and change management.

Server Systems Administrator III

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or other related field, or equivalent combination of education and applicable experience.

Demonstrated experience in the Linux operating system; DNS & DHCP ; syslog; security concepts including firewall and server hardening configurations; virtual technologies; converged and hyper-converged platforms; Storage Area Networks; IaaS environments; identity and access management solutions; enterprise scale server and network architectures; IT best practices to include change and incident management; project management processes and methods.

Demonstrated experience in providing comparative analysis in the research and application of emerging technologies and innovation from both an operational and architectural perspective.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Medium to advanced knowledge and experience managing and or all of the following technologies:

RedHat Enterprise Linux

VMware vSphere and vRealize Operations Manager

IP Address Management (Infoblox)

Identity and Access Management components ( SAML , LDAP , CAS , Shibboleth server)

SAN (Dell Compellent / Pure)

Oracle Database Appliance ( ODA )

Cisco UCS

Ansible; cronjobs; custom triggers; bash; PowerShell
