Senior Trader

The Senior Trader will be responsible for research, analysis, and transactional activity across a broad range of asset classes within the Assurant investment portfolio, including sovereigns, credit, structured products, interest rate, and foreign exchange markets. The Senior Trader must have broad transactional experience in both cash securities and derivatives, and be capable of autonomously executing trade activity. A deep understanding of market structure, pricing, and modeling is required, and the Senior Trader must show an aptitude for conceptualizing transactions, demonstrating the impact of trades and trade strategy, and communicating with portfolio managers and senior management.

This role will be a primary point of contact and will be responsible for fostering and managing strong working relationships across the industry on behalf of the firm. Excellent communication skills and experience interacting with sell-side trading and research desks is mandatory.

Primary job responsibilities include:

  • Executing trades across a broad range of asset classes
  • Independently develop individual security and thematic investment opportunities for presentation to portfolio managers
  • Modeling transactions and possible outcomes using tools such as Excel, Bloomberg, and Yieldbook
  • Prepare materials and presentations related to trade activity and market conditions, and write regular market commentary
  • Providing market color and insight to others within the asset management group
  • Apply broad range of skills to ad hoc requests within the broad asset management context, assisting across functional areas

Basic qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • 7+ years’ relevant work experience in trading and/or portfolio management

Preferred qualifications

  • 10+ years relevant work experience in trading and/or portfolio management, with demonstrated quantitative skills
  • Knowledge of structured products considered a plus, including CMBS, CLOs, CDOs, and agency/non-agency RMBS

Other requirements

  • Outstanding skills in finance, economics, and math
  • Knowledge of sovereign and credit markets, with a demonstrated understanding of pricing and market dynamics within each asset class
  • Knowledge of derivatives markets including futures, forwards, options, credit derivatives, and/or swaptions, with a demonstrated understanding of pricing and market dynamics
  • Expert level proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel) and derivatives functionality in Bloomberg; skills in Yieldbook, Intex, or Trepp considered positives
  • Demonstrated financial analysis, writing, and presentation skills
  • Extremely organized, self-motivated individual with the ability to work independently
  • Ability to accurately manage multiple projects and workflows
  • Knowledge of and passion for investing and global markets
  • Ability to travel as needed (less than 10%)

Candidates should have experience in at least some of the markets below. At times, the Senior Trader may be required to transact in many of the following markets, and the candidate should make clear areas of experience and expertise. Candidates should highlight analytical capabilities, and/or experience with analytical tools such as Yieldbook, Intex, Trepp, and Bloomberg.

  • Cash securities including :
    • Global sovereign bond markets, in both local and foreign currencies
    • Credit markets
    • Agency RMBS / CMO structures
    • CMBS / CDO or other structured credit products
    • Convertible or other equity linked securities or structures
  • Derivatives markets including :
    • Credit default swaps
    • Interest rate swaps and futures
    • FX forwards
    • Interest rate / credit / FX options
