Senior Hardware Engineer

Amazon Fulfillment Technologies (AFT) powers the physical engine at the heart of Amazon. AFT builds and operates software, hardware, and processes that run the global network of fulfillment centers that move many millions of units of inventory, employ tens of thousands of people, and ensure that customers get what they want when we promised we would get it to them. We do this by building automated solutions to handle things that technology does well, while relying on people to handle things that humans do well.
Our environment is global and complex with a variety of software and systems, including industrial machines and protocols. We are constantly innovating in the ways we are automating and accelerating the delivery of products and packages which includes building custom hardware and applying machine learning, image processing, and real-time data processing using distributed systems.

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled, experienced Hardware Engineer to join AFT’s Automation Technologies team exploring and evaluating new technologies. If you’re ready for your next challenge and want to be part of a cutting-edge development team, this is the role for you.

Key responsibilities include:

1. Identify and evaluate new motion, environmental, and health sensors and emerging technologies

2. Drive evaluations and prototyping of new sensor solutions for potential integration to new products.

3. Develop a multi-year sensor roadmap including motion, health and fitness, and environmental sensors.

4. Identifying new sensor technology and analyze trade-offs (e.g., maturity, performance, schedule, and cost).

5. Responsible for sensor platform design and solutions for future fulfillment center solution.

6. Generate sensor system-level requirements and functional specifications to guide R&D teams during development phase.

7. Work closely with technology incubators, start-ups, and local vendors to identify new technology opportunities.

Basic Qualifications
1. Solid experience in hardware architecture

2. Familiarity with MEMS and other sensors technology (pressure, gyro, accelerometer, IR, Magnetometer), including sensor fusion and wearables experience.

3. Experience in low power architecture, power distribution, and current consumption optimization.

4. Experience with development of sensor algorithms and sensor fusion techniques.

5. Prototype innovative sensors, electro-optical and/or opto-mechanical systems.

6. Be self-motivated and able to work independently on projects.

7. Excellent communication and presentation skills and ability to interface internally and externally at all management levels.

8. Ability to travel to international and domestic development sites and customer locations.

Preferred Qualifications
1. MS/PhD in EE or equivalent

2. 5+ years of working experience

3. Image processing background

4. Has the innate ability to inspire passion in others

5. Strong organizational skills, ability of managing multiple projects
