SBDC at FIU Financial Consulting Apprenticeship

The SBDC at FIU Financial Consulting Apprenticeship is a 6 month hands-on training program that offers FIU College of Business graduate students an opportunity to learn key aspects of financial analysis, business consulting, and entrepreneurship while being mentored by experienced SBDC at FIU business advisors. The apprentice will work closely with a team of SBDC at FIU advisors who specialize in providing financial consulting to local business owners and entrepreneurs. As part of assisting the SBDC at FIU consultants, the apprentice will learn how to: analyze the finances of a business, develop budgets, estimate expense and revenue projections, analyze cash flow, manage cost controls and more. The apprentice also will assist in helping local businesses obtain capital and learn about the local banking and business-investment industries. Candidates should be individuals who love and have a talent for crunching numbers, as well as networking with bankers and other financial professionals.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Provides research and administrative support to SBDC at FIU Business Advisor – Finance;
  • Assists consultant working with large client portfolio of growing companies in Miami-Dade County, as well as pre-venture and startup businesses;
  • Identifies and assesses business capital and funding alternatives;
  • Develops and analyzes financial projections, pro-forma and other financial documents;
  • Performs financial analysis health check of companies;
  • Assists clients with lender/investor presentations and facilitate conferences with lenders/investors;
  • Develops financial management strategies and solutions using financial management software;
  • Attend recommended outside trainings or events to build experience with aspects of financial analysis;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position;
Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Marketing, Accounting, Finance, Economics or related field;
  • Finance, banking or commercial lending experience preferred

Who May Apply

Students enrolled at FIU with a minimum of six credit hours as an Undergraduate or three credit hours as a Graduate during the Fall or Spring semester.

During breaks, Students need only remain enrolled and are not required to take credit hours.

Student Disclosure

Applicants must be currently enrolled as a student at FIU with a minimum of 6 credits as an Undergraduate student or 3 credits as a Graduate student.

Students in their final semester or pursing PHD’s may be enrolled with less credits.

Work Schedule

  • Work a maximum of 20 hours per week;
  • Apprenticeship will be for 6 months.
  • Travel throughout Miami-Dade County to serve clients, and travel outside of Miami-Dade County for training and professional development as necessary; and
  • Flexible schedule to accommodate appointments between SBDC at FIU Business Advisor – Finance and clients.
