Recreation Coordinator

Coordinates the organization, staffing, and operational activities for market rate programs and activities which provide a varied and complete program of recreational services that meet the needs of the community. The services include youth and adult sports, specialty classes, special events, fee classes/camps, and other community programs.

Work involves program development and implementation; assessing needs; working with various community groups; planning, organizing, and promotion. Positions of this class provide on-site direction of specialized programs and/or activities as assigned.

Work is performed under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Director, with considerable latitude for initiative and originality.

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The following tasks are representative and not to be considered all inclusive.

  • Coordinates recreational activities; conducts needs assessments; develops and plans programs and events based upon community needs; organizes, promotes, implements, and evaluates programs and events.
  • Schedules activities and works with instructors as assigned; monitors on-site activities; assigns and directs the work of volunteers and contracted staff.
  • Keeps accurate attendance records and writes administration reports; recommends changes to programs based upon information collected. Contributes to the quarterly reporting process and public reporting to boards and Council.
  • Keeps records of youth financial assistance for city-sponsored programs. Maintains relationship with local funding organization.
  • Works with other staff, volunteers, and instructors to estimate material and equipment for programs, and purchases supplies and equipment within approved limits.
  • Coordinates field and facility reservations and rentals for programs, classes, and special events.
  • Recommends facility maintenance and improvement expenditures; coordinates with maintenance department to resolve facility concerns.
  • Provides advisory support to citizen committees, community partners, and volunteers to facilitate the delivery of recreation programs. Facilitate and promote involvement of youth with regards to local government affairs, youth issues, and programming.
  • Produces and publicizes, with input from other staff and divisions, the Wilsonville Activity Guide.

Coordinate and perform other projects, functions, and tasks, as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education : Requires a Bachelor’s degree in recreation administration, public administration, or closely related field.

Experience : Requires three (3) years of experience in public recreation or any equivalent combination of education or experience.

Required Certifications/Licenses: Requires a valid driver license.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of recreation and leisure service administration.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Skill in developing, promoting, scheduling, and coordinating programs and special events.
  • Skill in computer entry and use including: data entry, program and/or course entry and scheduling, facility scheduling as needed and computer based registration processes.
  • Skill in analyzing specific community recreation needs and to adopt programs to meet needs.
  • Skill in keeping accurate records including registration, deposits, receipts and community data.
  • Skill in active listening, coordination, a social perceptiveness.
  • Skill in monitoring/assessing performance to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • Skill in time management, instruction, and critical thinking.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, city employees, users, community groups, special interest groups, advisory boards, other governmental agencies, and the general public.
  • Ability to develop an effective public relations and marketing strategy with respect to recreation programs.
  • Ability to learn city procedures, regulations and requirements with respect to procurement, safety, operations and organization.
  • Ability to analyze and summarize recreation program data.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas verbally so others will understand.
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences, including the ability to identify and understand the speech of another person.
  • Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet).
  • Ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
  • Ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions.

Additional Information:

Work Environment: Work is primarily performed in an environmentally controlled office environment but may have exposure to adverse weather conditions related to outdoor recreation events. Work assignments include evenings and weekends.

Physical Requirements : While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Cognitive Functions : The position incumbent works in a fast-paced office environment characterized by frequent deadlines, interruptions, and complex decision making processes. Work is performed with minimal direction and supervision. Work routinely requires independent judgment and most problems are difficult with precedent occasionally available. The incumbent must be capable of working effectively with coworkers and members of the public. Concentration and focus are required to complete complex, detail oriented tasks.

Tools/Equipment Used : General office equipment, including but not limited to: computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, and copy machine. Computer software including but not limited to: word-processing, spreadsheet, website, design, and database programs. Various sports equipment used in recreation programs.
