R&D Mechanical Engineer – Advanced Mechanical Engineering (Experienced)

What Your Job Will Be Like

Openings exist for R&D Mechanical Engineers within Departments 2613, 2614, 2615, and 2616. The successful candidate will work within a Product Realization Team (PRT) structure that requires interactions with mechanical, quality, reliability, nuclear safety, manufacturing, and system engineers. The successful candidate should enjoy working in a challenging and dynamic environment on high visibility programs supporting critical national interests. This position offers substantial opportunity for training, technical mentorship, and working with many different areas of Sandia.

Some travel is required.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s in Mechanical Engineering or relevant science, technology, engineering or mathematics discipline.
  • 5 years of relevant engineering experience
  • Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-Level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire

  • Thorough knowledge of and experience with designing, planning, and executing research, design, and development projects
  • Experience with component failure analysis
  • Basic proficiency with CAD Systems (e.g., Pro/E, Creo, or Solidworks)
  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Experience with finite element analysis (structural and dynamic) and solid modeling software
  • Experience working with vendors and machine shops to fabricate hardware
  • Experience with mechanical testing (e.g., vibration, thermal, etc)
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to team across disciplines
  • Experience working with the National Security Campus (Formerly Kansas City Plant) in delivering War Reserve quality hardware
  • Knowledge of the implementation of nuclear safety architectures
  • Active DOE Q-Level security clearance

About Our Team

Within the Advanced Mechanical Engineering Group, Departments 2613, 2614, 2615, and 2616 develop surety mechanisms for Nuclear Weapons (NW) applications. The departments have responsibility for conceptual design, full-scale engineering development, product characterization, product qualification, component production support, and ongoing surveillance. Mechanisms for which the departments have design responsibility include unique signal stronglinks, use control devices, acceleration profile switches, and weapon release detection switches.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
