Public Health Assistant, Bureau of Immunization/Immunization Registry

The New York City Department of Health/Bureau of Immunization (BOI), Citywide Immunization Registry (CIR) is a central record-keeping system established by DOHMH to track the immunization status of individual children and to monitor immunization levels in the population in a timely manner. The CIR is accessible to licensed health care providers, parents and agencies authorized by DOHMH for the retrieval of immunization records for the purpose of ensuring that children receive all required immunizations and are, thereby, protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

–Answer routine vaccine-related questions from providers, parents, health plans, and the public at large, and make appropriate referrals.

–Query the CIR databases to locate immunization records and provide information to health care providers and parents on obtaining immunization records.

–Organize and maintain logs of BOI’s hotline utilization data and enter information into an automated database.

–Send and process email, post mail, and faxes requesting patient records and other information from the BOI hotline.

–Assist provider offices with vaccine orders and Vaccine For Children (VFC) Program re-enrollment, and assist with providing education and information about the VFC program and its requirements.

–Assist with outreach efforts for the recruitment and retention of providers in the CIR.

–Prepare reports and perform other special assignments as needed to meet program objectives.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization; or

2. Completion of eleventh grade of high school, and one year of full-time satisfactory experience performing health-related or clerical duties.

3. Education and/or experience that is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have completed the eleventh grade of high school.

Preferred Skills

–Have excellent customer service, organizational, and communication skills

–Detailed-oriented; accurate data entry skills and experience handling large volume of data

–Courteous and professional telephone skills and have strong computer skills and familiarity with MS Office.

Additional Information

The federal government provides student loan forgiveness through its Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) to all qualifying public service employees. Working with the DOHMH qualifies you as a public service employee and you may be able to take advantage of this program while working full-time and meeting the program’s other requirements.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
