    Department Marketing Statement

    Through its 12 departments and programs, the Division of Social Sciences in the College of Letters and Sciences vigorously promotes such scientific study by offering an outstanding teaching and research environment in which students can develop an understanding of the diverse cultures and societies of today’s constantly changing world. The Division offers more than 6,500 undergraduate and 400 graduate students the opportunity to study and learn from nationally and internationally recognized faculty.


    Brief Summary of Job Duties

    Under the General Supervision of the Assistant Dean, the Project Analyst provides analytical support on a variety of programs and initiatives under the direction of the Dean. Assists in program planning, development, administration, management and implementation. Provides a hands-on approach to reaching out to students with the expert guidance of select faculty involved with these special initiatives linked directly to the Dean’s office. Duties include: Department-specific analysis of student success barriers and review of measures that have been implemented; website management; outreach; social media; grant-writing, and event planning. Collates and disseminates information in a multidisciplinary research forum. Presents data on the Special Initiatives to the Dean’s team for engaged dialog at the Deans Cabinet bi-annual meetings.

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent combination of education and prior experience.
  • Exceptional organizational, writing, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience with or demonstrated ability to learn new software and technology (e.g. social media platforms, content management systems, etc.)
  • Ability to understand, interpret, apply, communicate, and articulate complex information, including UC policy and procedure.
  • Must be detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to independently analyze complex situations and provide appropriate solutions.
  • Working under general direction must have the ability to creatively problem-solve, prioritize tasks, and interact with individuals at all levels of the organization in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills and the ability to work in a team environment.

  • 35% Daily – Feminist Futures – Support

    The Center for Feminist Futures promotes research, education, creative work and public engagement in gender, sexuality, and feminist studies from intersectional, interdisciplinary, and global perspectives. This initiative was launched in 2019-20 and requires staff management to accelerate progress toward launching the Center to enhance intergenerational connections between established and junior scholars, activists and emerging voices on our campus and in local schools and organizations. Focus on building research methods and training opportunities for undergraduate students under the guidance of faculty leads from the Social Sciences and Humanities. Responsible for website management, outreach, social media, grant-writing, and event planning for the Center. Manages and supervises internships and working groups in the undergraduate student community as identified by faculty mentors and collaborators.

    35% Daily – Student Success – Data Analysis, Research Support

    This program is designed to enhance the rate of academic success among students majoring in the social sciences with a focus on students identified as URM, first generation, low income and transfers.

    The Project Analyst takes the lead on the following tasks, supervised by the Assistant Dean, and the "Student Success" Committee: Comprehensive review of existing UCSB resources for this student population; Synthesis of best practices, drawing on experiences both at UCSB and nationally; Compilation and analysis of comparative data on this student group in relation to the whole student body; Department-specific analysis of student success barriers and review of measures that have been implemented in response. Once the program is implemented the Analyst will be charged with monitoring the results and will assess the impact for continuation and expansion of the model.

    15% Daily – Global Migration- Support

    With the implementation of hiring new faculty in the migration cluster, collaborative research is encouraged. The Project Analyst provides support to key new faculty in this initiative to collect and synthesize data. Works as a coordinator in collating and disseminating information in a multidisciplinary research forum, creating a model of cohesive collaboration and assisting with new faculty building an area of interest in research among themselves and with students. This is particularly important in this new remote learning environment where the Division wants to focus on welcoming and retaining our freshman, transfer and continuing students.

    15% Daily – Annual Deans Cabinet

    The Dean hosts a bi-annual Deans Cabinet, where key Social Science Donors review and plan development initiatives for the Division. This position is instrumental in working with the Development team to compile information from the Special Initiatives outlined above and presents the data to the Dean’s team for engaged dialog at the Cabinet meeting.
