Program Manager – Modeling and Optimization, Air

Amazon seeks motivated and open minded individuals with strong analytical skills and practical program management experience to join our Middle Mile Air Optimization team. We seek program managers for our team with experience working with business partners to develop requirements, management of complex business modeling programs to support a number of decision support and optimization tools designed to build and operate Amazon’s complex middle mile transportation network. Applicants should have experience in transportation and systems engineering, network design, mathematical optimization, demand forecasting and overall program management.

Middle Mile Air transportation represents one of the fastest growing logistics areas within Amazon. Amazon Fulfillment Services transports millions of packages via air and ground and continues to grow year over year. The scale of this operation challenges Amazon to design, build and operate robust transportation networks that minimize the overall operational cost while meeting all customer deadlines. The Middle Mile Modeling and Optimization group is charged with developing an evolving suite of decision support and optimization tools to facilitate the design of efficient air and ground transport networks, optimize the flow of packages within the network to efficiently align network capacity and shipment demand, and effectively utilize scarce resources, such as aircraft and trucks. Time horizons for these tools vary from years and months for long-term planning to hours and minutes for near-term operational decision making and disruption recovery. These tools rely heavily on mathematical optimization, stochastic simulation, meta-heuristic and machine learning techniques. In addition, Amazon often finds existing techniques do not effectively match our unique business needs which necessitates the innovation and development of new approaches and algorithms to find an adequate solution.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS (required) or MS in Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics or a related field.
  • 3+ years experience in transportation logistics.
  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and business people. Ability to speak at a level appropriate for the audience. Ability to identify, document and clarify business requirements for proposed decision support and optimization tools across a wide ranging variety of transportation problems (for both long-term planning and short-term operational and disruption recovery problems).
  • Ability to liaison with our business partners and our technical and development staff.
  • Open minded approach to new ideas, technologies and directions that improve the overall line-haul transshipment solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the daily operation of line-haul transportation scheduling and management or airline scheduling and operations.
  • Program Management experience with complex transportation initiatives.
  • A willingness to learn new technologies and try new ideas.
