Product Manager: Community, Profiles and Moderation

Lonely Planet is looking for an exceptional, end-user focused Product Manager working on our Community, Profiles and Moderation products in our fast-growing digital operation in Franklin, Tennessee.

This is an opportunity to be involved with the continuing evolution of one of the world’s most loved travel brands. The work done by our digital product team will shape Lonely Planet’s future, and in particular work to build the next generation of our engaged and passionate community of like-minded travelers.

As Product Manager of Lonely Planet’s Community, Profiles and Moderation applications and products, you are responsible for delivering a suite of cutting-edge community products, and ensuring that Lonely Planet is best in class at delivering a safe, fun and responsible experience for travellers who interact on our platforms.

You will work as a team with community, product and technology colleagues to ensure Thorn Tree, our legendary forums, continue to be one of the best places on the web for travellers to meet, and also deliver new community products to power the next generation of engagement with Lonely Planet.

The day-to-day

  • Help define a product vision and strategy that excites and grows our Community through new and existing platforms and products.
  • With the Community Operations Manager, ensure our community products meet industry and legal best practice.
  • Ensure next generation community tools are rolled out in a way that ensure broad acceptance and engagement, working alongside technology colleagues to ensure these products are optimal.
  • Hold accountability for moderation governance and systems, including all tools and processes necessary for meeting legal and brand requirements.
  • Own the applications that contain our community data and moderation tools and act as gatekeeper for our community.
  • Develop metrics for community activity and produce reports that inform community strategy; communicate findings to the wider business.
  • Drive the creation of product requirements – help generate feature ideas and facilitate agreements between internal teams, ensuring products are built efficiently.
  • Communicate, coordinate and work closely with company leaders, UX designers and engineers to deliver products that fit our company goals.
  • Build a strong relationship with our developer and moderation teams to understand what is and isn’t working on existing platforms and during the construction of new ones.
  • Stay in touch with users to understand what they love or don’t love as our product evolves.
  • Articulate user stories and business parameters, and identify success metrics for new products on an iterative basis.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Computer Science or a related technical field or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 5 years of prior experience in Product management or digital product design.
  • Passionate about communities and the role they play in content creation, engagement and brand-building.
  • Ability to work in an agile and iterative environment.
  • Proven ability to tell a story with compelling data and use an iterative approach to data collection and management.
  • Interest and ability to manage a non-technical Community Manager.
  • Ability to use quantitative and qualitative sources to design and validate ideas.
  • Understanding of UI/UX best practices, including when to follow patterns and when to push boundaries.
  • Strong technical background and experience working directly with engineers, with a firm grasp on the technical details driving the product.
