The Gas & Illuminator Laser program needs laboratory support on the following kinds of projects: fabrication of novel glasses and optical characterization of glasses.

Experience

The person should have a prior background in performing scientific work related to materials and chemistry. Prior background in the following: 1. assembling optical systems involving low power lasers, 2. taking data, and 3. analyzing data. Experience in the design of custom parts highly desired. The person should also have the desire to learn and to broaden their horizons.

  • High level of self-motivation and ability to learn to work independently on topics relating to fabrication novel optical materials.This will involve weighing / mixing raw materials, melting the materials to form a glass in a furnace, and cutting and polishing the resultant material;
  • High level of self-motivation and ability to learn to work independently on topics relating to the set up and operation of experiments to optically characterize bulk materials, record and analyze data;
  • Perform complex analyses of experimental data to include complex calculations;
  • Proficient at programming in languages such as C++, Matlab, and LabView;
  • Able to review scientific papers in the area of chemistry/materials and be able to extract information enabling design of chemical experiments
  • Ability to design mechanical parts and effect their installation once they become available.
  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance and cleanup.
