Principal Account Clerk, Department of Finance

The mission of the Finance Department is to manage, protect and report on the City of San José’s financial resources to enhance the City’s financial condition for residents, businesses, and investors. The Finance Department has 118 employees and an operating budget of approximately $18 million.

The organizational structure consists of the following Divisions:

  • Accounting
  • Administration/Revenue Management
  • Purchasing
  • Treasury

Positions & Duties

The Finance Department’s Accounting Division is seeking candidates for the Principal Account Clerk position in the Accounts Payable section.

The essential duties of a Principal Accountant position may include but are not limited to:

Customer service to departmental fiscal staff and walk-in customers

Performing audits for p-card and travel statements. Review the policies and perform compliance audits for the p-card and travel audits.

Reviewing purchase order payments, batches, p-card edit lists and refund edit lists

Accruing sales tax to the sales tax database

Processing voided checks and canceled invoices

Handling checks – weekly check run distribution – Seal and mail checks

Covering the Accounts Payable front counter and incoming call

Maintaining files

Distributing daily mail and incoming faxes

Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to:

  • Education: Successful completion of high school, General Educational Development (GED) Certificate or California Proficiency Certificate.
  • Experience: – Three (3) years experience of accounting clerical experience, including one (1) year in the performance of complex accounting clerical functions at the level of Senior Account Clerk with the City of San Jose.
  • License/Certificates: Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license.
