Population Geneticist

Job description

  • Establish population genetics approaches, bioinformatics pipelines, algorithms, and analysis for use and application in our products
  • Identify critical research and technical issues involved with bioinformatics and large-scale data analysis operations in existing and future pipelines, determining if results are affected, and finding solutions if necessary
  • Participate and lead analysis for both internal research projects, external research collaborations, and publications
  • Develop methods and perform analyses that will advance the understanding of human genetics and shape FamilyTreeDNA’s consumer product
  • Initiate long-term R&D projects that bring research advances into FamilyTreeDNA’s consumer product
  • Work collaboratively with members of the Gene By Gene Research, Engineering, and Product teams
  • Provide scientific support to a variety of teams across the company in a way that makes scientific knowledge accessible to a wide audience

Skills and Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Population Genetics, Statistical Genetics, Epidemiology, or a related field (e.g., Genetics, Computer Science, Statistics, Public Health, Bioinformatics, Physics, Mathematics)
  • Evolutionary or human population genetics research experience
  • Experience in algorithm development or machine learning approaches
  • Experience in a Unix / Linux environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Enthusiasm for working in a highly collaborative environment
  • A good understanding of anthropology, population genetics, and statistical models is a must

Competency in the following technologies

  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Perl or Python.
  • Experience in bioinformatics programming skills in scripting or programming languages such as R, Perl, Python, etc and related bioinformatics/biostatistics packages/jupyter
  • Experience with BASH scripting and Unix/Linux command line tools
  • Experience with databases, particularly MS SQL Server or Postgres
  • Familiarity with version control systems, preferably Git
  • Experience in high performance computing, clusters and cloud computing
