The City of Idaho Falls is now accepting applications for the position of Police Officer . Police Officers preserve the public peace, protect life and property, prevent crimes, and arrest violators; patrol an assigned area using a police car, bicycle, or on foot; respond to calls for service and initiate police action when appropriate.

NOTE: We encourage existing Police Officers from other agencies to apply. Salary may be negotiable for candidates with two (2) or more years comparable experience as a Police Officer.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

A selection panel will conduct interviews with the selected candidates to continue in the process.

THE POSITION:

A Police Officer is assigned to the Patrol Unit and will serve a one-year probationary period. Police Officers work eight-, ten-, or 12-hour shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays depending on assignment and the needs of the department. Initial training will fall under the direction of the Training Unit. Officers will participate in a 16-week field-training program and the 10 week POST academy session that encompasses academic, physical, and practical training necessary to complete Idaho POST certification requirements.

Essential Functions:

Receives training in law enforcement principles and procedures, such as criminal investigation, evidence collection, patrol, and traffic procedures. Receives training in applicable Laws, Ordinances, Codes, and Departmental Rules and Procedures. Receives in-service training and guidance from Supervisors while performing entry-level law enforcement work in patrol, traffic, and other Police functions.

May operate a Police vehicle while patrolling an assigned area; responds to calls for assistance; enforces Laws and Ordinances; performs other functions normally performed by an Officer on a training basis with supervision. Prepares accident, offense, incident, arrest, and other forms of reports. Checks for proper operation of assigned equipment; performs emergency repair; reports mechanical problems.

Administers first aid to injured individuals as needed.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

To be eligible candidates must have the following:

1. United States citizenship (POST Certification requirement).

2. 21 years of age by May 31, 2017.

3. A valid driver’s license.

4. The ability to successfully complete all testing requirements.

5. Good written and oral communication skills.

6. The ability to function on a day-to-day basis with limited supervision.

7. Certified by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) Council within one year of employment.

8. Successful candidates must pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination.

9. Successful candidates must pass medical and psychological examinations (after a contingent offer of employment).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical Fitness Testing Battery (PFTB) – Applicants must be able to satisfactorily complete the PFTB, meeting minimum standards.

CRIMINAL RECORD/MILITARY RECORD:

A conviction or withheld judgment of any state, local or federal crime may be grounds for rejection. An applicant must be rejected who has been convicted of any felony crime regardless of whether the imposition of a sentence is deferred, withheld, or the penalty suspended. Dismissal from the military service, a bad conduct charge, dishonorable discharge, or other than honorable discharge will disqualify the applicant per POST certification requirements. General under honorable conditions may be grounds for rejection.

TRAFFIC RECORD:

A record of suspensions, DWS, DUI convictions, or withheld judgment during the five years preceding application and habitual violations of five or more moving convictions during the three years preceding application will come under review by POST Council for certification.

Work Environment:

Tasks require a variety of physical activities periodically involving muscular strain related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting and reaching. Essential functions require talking, hearing and seeing. Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Frequent local travel required in course of performing portions of job functions. Elements of the job pose various degrees of hazard uncertainty common to law enforcement.
