PLANT ENGINEER I – FULL TIME/VARIED – 120000004599

Demonstrates knowledge of and use of alarms and fire and safety equipment during drills or annual certification procedures

Demonstrates proper procedures in safety techniques on the job to ensure the safety of self and others.

Knowledgeable in hospital rules, regulations, policies and procedures related to position

Is the first responder for many work requests received by the Engineering Department.

Clears sinks, drains and/or toilets that are draining slowly with either a plunger and /or hand snake

Investigates reports of improper room temperature (i.e. too cold, too hot) and adjusts and /or replaces thermostats as appropriate.

Investigates reports of tripped branch-circuit breakers and resets breakers as appropriate.

Replaces missing and /or stained ceiling tiles.

Replaces burned out lamps and/or re-lamp areas assigned.

Troubleshoots and replaces defective nurse-call pillow speakers. Performs minor repairs on nurse-call system as required

Refers work requests that cannot be completed and/or require the assistance of a tradesman (e.g. electrician, plumber, HVAC technician, BioMed technician) to the Engineering or BioMed Supervisor

Performs preventative maintenance and repairs to maintain the Medical Center and the Central Plant equipment.

Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on beds, wheelchairs, over-bed tables, gurneys, surgery tables, surgical lights, Trans-Logic system including blower/transfer units and unit stations.

Assist HVAC technicians with filter changes

Adjust, repairs and /or replaces door hardware on doors to include hydraulic door closers, panic hardware, hinges etc. Also performs adjustments on fire doors, linen/trash chute doors to ensure doors close and latch as required by the fire codes.

Performs inspections and tests of Life Safety and Fire Suppression systems as required by NFPA and Joint Commission

Performs weekly fire pump test. Performs monthly inspection of fire extinguishers, underground water-storage tank for fire sprinkler system. Tests and inspects battery back-up lighting systems and exit lights relamping as necessary.

Performs quarterly inspection of dry stand-pipe systems.

Assists licensed contractors with quarterly, semi-annual and annual tests and inspections of fire alarms and fire sprinkler systems.

Knows the location of medical vacuum pumps and medical air-pumps. Knows how to monitor operational status of pumps. Knows how to turn on additional pumps in the event of pump failure and/or increased demand.

Knows the location of the main and reserve bulk-oxygen storage tanks. Knows how to read tanks levels and how to contact vendor to request oxygen deliveries and check order status

Knows the location of medical vacuum pumps and medical air-pumps. Knows how to monitor operational status of pumps. Knows how to turn on additional pumps in the event of pump failure and/or increased demand.

Knows the location of the basement and 6th floor medical-gas storage rooms and how to change bottles (cylinders) for piped medical gas systems (i.e. nitrous oxide, oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen systems).

Knows the location of the medical gas alarm panels and what action is required when an alarm occurs.

Other duties as assigned or requested.

1. High School Diploma or GED.

2. Two (2) years work experience in a hospital maintenance department or five (5) years experience in a facilities maintenance position preferred.

3. Current Drivers License preferred.
