Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and Get Healthy Philly Project Coordinator

This full time 14-month position will coordinate and implement all aspects of a randomized controlled trial with 28 recreation centers and a pilot center to increase water access and appeal through a comprehensive multi-level intervention. The person in this position will work closely with Parks & Recreation (PPR) practitioner staff and Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) staff to implement grant activities including, community engagement, conducting background literature reviews, project management, coordinating installation of hydration stations with Facilities Director, implementing programming and staff training, managing data collection and entry, leading Institutional Review Board applications, project-related administrative activities, and report writing and analysis. The position will report to the Director of Research and Evaluation in the Division of Chronic Disease Prevention.

Position Content Focus

This position is supported through a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant that aims to encourage water consumption to improve the health and wellness of youth in Philadelphia Parks & Recreation programs. The employee in this position will need experience in both community-based program implementation as well as some familiarity with research skills.

Specific Activities

The Project Coordinator will accomplish the following:

  • Liaise with PPR, PDPH, and other City of Philadelphia and external staff around project implementation activities. The Project Coordinator must be able to communicate the project goals and report findings to a variety of audiences and stakeholders.
  • Develop scalable, evidence-based curriculum activities to promote water consumption in recreation centers and lead staff trainings for curriculum activities.
  • Support recreation centers to develop their own novel ideas around discouraging the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages at their centers.
  • Perform all aspects of the research process under guidance of the Principal Investigator; including: literature reviews, recruitment and retention, designing research questions, completing Institutional Review Board applications, constructing research instruments, data collection, data entry and preparation, and reporting of research findings.
  • Train and provide continuous coaching to Parks & Recreation practitioner staff in data collection and measurement protocols related to the grant project. Interpret data to staff and program participants.
    • This will involve traveling to Parks & Recreation facilities throughout Philadelphia.
    • Project Coordinator is responsible for his/her transportation.
    • Some afternoon, evening, and Saturday hours will be required.
  • Performs related work as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in public health, public or government administration, public policy, social or behavioral sciences, recreation management, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Three years prior experience with implementing community-based public health related programming and evaluation, or any equivalent of education and experience deemed to be acceptable by the Department of Public Health and the Department of Parks and Recreation.

  • Salary

    • This position is a temporary grant funded position from May 1st 2017 through Sept 30th 2018.
    • The salary range is $48,000 – $52,000 depending on experience.
