Description: The Sojourner Pet Companion shelter is a unique pet shelter located on the campus of the Sojourner Center, the largest domestic violence shelter in Arizona. Lost Our Home Pet Rescue works in partnership with Sojourner Center to manage the daily operations of the Sojourner Pet Companion Shelter.

The position of Program Manager combines managing the shelter, providing pet care and working with women and children who are living in the domestic violence shelter to provide a homelike, retreat in which to spend time with their pets and heal. It also involves helping pets heal from their trauma, doing some training on the dogs that need it, and providing important information to pet parents about responsible pet parenting so they can leave the shelter with all the resources and info they need to have a happy, healthy life with their pets. This is a part-time position with an average of 20 hours a week.

Job Duties include:

  • Care for pets that are living at the Sojourner Pet Companion Shelter.
  • Teach pet parents responsible pet parenting.
  • Train employees
  • Do employee schedule and payroll
  • Schedule vet appointments, coordinate transport to vets
  • Liaison between Pet Companion Shelter and Lost Our Home Rescue Executive Director
  • Manage Pet Therapy program
  • Ensure all data needed is being collected correctly, then do monthly reports
  • Develop and implement appropriate policies and procedures to ensure the safety and welfare of the pets and the people who come into contact with them.
  • When dogs come to the shelter with behavior problems, re-teach pets to be good citizens and have basic social skills and knowledge of simple commands.
  • Schedule and monitor visitors into the pet center
  • Introduce women in the shelter to a variety of pet-related careers and provide basic skills training and testing to ensure they are ready to participate in training programs
  • Maintain strict confidentiality at all times about those living at Sojourner Center.
  • Must be available weekends and some holidays

Qualifications:

  • 2 yrs experience with pet care required. Dog training experience a big plus.
  • 1 year management experience
  • Adequate strength to manage large dogs that are strong and may pull or run on a leash.
  • Ability to learn to give vaccinations (dogs and cats) and draw blood from cats for testing purposes.
  • Understand and implement basic behavior training for dogs as needed.
  • Ability to develop and implement career-related skills training and testing.
  • Highly organized, self-starter with excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to work with people of all ages in stressful situations while maintaining a sense of humor and appropriate boundaries.
  • Must possess a valid AZ driver’s license, have reliable, insured transportation.
  • Must be eligible for a valid AZ fingerprint clearance card and be able to pass a background check.
  • Excellent computer (Microsoft office, email) and communication skills.
  • Experience working in an animal shelter preferred
