PARKING CONTROL CHECKER I – NON-CAREER

DESCRIPTION
The Environmental Services Bureau of the Department of Public Works is seeking non-career Parking Control Checkers for its Clean Long Beach Division.

Parking Control Checkers with the Clean Long Beach Division are primarily tasked with issuing citations for vehicles parked or standing in violation of posted street sweeping signs, parking signs and restricted zones. Shifts vary from early morning to late evening depending on assignment. Non-career employees are not guaranteed a minimum number of work hours; however, it is anticipated the selected candidates will work approximately 27 hours per week.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • In accordance with applicable provisions of the California Vehicle Code, issues notices of violation of statues of the State of California, ordinances of the City of Long Beach, and regulations issued relating to the parking or standing of vehicles;
  • Travels with street sweeping personnel and cites those vehicles parked in excess of posted street sweeping signs, parking signs, and restricted zones;
  • Marks tires of vehicles parked in time zones and cites those vehicles parked in excess of posted time limits;
  • Detects and reports inoperative parking meters;
  • Reports unenforceable curbs and defaced signs;
  • Enforces permit parking in City lots and City streets;
  • May appear in court to testify when applicable;
  • Provides information to the public regarding statutes and ordinances relating to parking and other matters;
  • Performs other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

  • One year work experience providing customer service and/or interacting with the public.
  • A Valid California Class C Driver License.
  • Willingness to work various hours and/or shifts, including weekends, holidays, and outdoors.
  • Previous experience in Parking Control and/or as a law enforcement paraprofessional is highly desirable.
