Park Ranger 1 (The Cove Palisades State Park)

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s Mission is to provide and protect outstanding natural, scenic, cultural, historic and recreational sites for the enjoyment and education of present and future generations.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is currently recruiting for one (1) Park Ranger 1 position at The Cove Palisades State Park , located near Culver, Oregon.

There is currently one (1) permanent, full-time vacancy.

This position is represented by the Service Employee International Union (SEIU).

This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants and may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

The Cove Palisades Park Ranger 1 position is responsible to perform, conduct and oversee a variety of tasks in order to protect, maintain, operate and repair state park lands, natural and cultural resources, structures, facilities, equipment and systems by using skills in building trades, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting and landscape maintenance, as well as specialized program skills (e.g.: resource interpretation, cultural and natural resource restoration, utility infrastructure operation, park rule enforcement, etc.) related to the maintenance and operations of OPRD programs, properties within the Cove Palisades Management Unit. ADDITIONAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Have a criminal history background check that meets OPRD criteria at the time of hire and throughout employment;

Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and throughout employment with a driving record that meets OPRD standards;

Must wear OPRD supplied uniform and comply with appearance code while on duty;

Must comply with and adhere to applicable federal, state, local, and agency rules, laws, standards and policies; Obtain and maintain one or more of the following after appointment, as applicable or required to perform duties of the position:

− First Aid/CPR Certification

− Enforcement Officer Status

− Water Treatment Certificate

− Oregon Boat Operators Certificate

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping). OR

An Associate’s degree in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies and 6 months of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

NOTE : A higher level degree may substitute for the Associate’s degree. There is no substitute for the 6 months experience.

DESIRED ATTRIBUTES

Skills in the safe use of tools, material and equipment associated with landscape, building, facility and utility system maintenance;

Skills in performing basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, grounds keeping tasks;

Skills in resolving customer complaints related to overnight camping and park rule interpretation;

Leadership experience and/or skills working with diverse work team including volunteers, youth crews, or the general public;

Experience providing exceptional customer service working with the public or in a public setting;

Skills in planning and organizing equipment, materials and staff to accomplish work;

Skills in evaluating situations, applying rules and guidelines, determining and carrying out appropriate courses of action to achieve desired results;

Desire to work outdoors in all weather;

Computer knowledge/data entry including fee collection, cash handling, registration of customers and experience with data entry.
