The South Kitsap School District is looking for a Network Support Specialist to administer a variety of technical IT systems primarily focused on SERVER administration in a Microsoft Active Directory network. This position works under the direction of the Supervisor of Network Services, to support district-wide operations of IT services; this position works with department and district staff, and students to analyze and resolve problems with end-user devices (including desktop PCs and peripherals), most often at an advanced troubleshooting level; assists with server growth and disaster recovery planning; provides leadership and project management for IT-related projects working with customers, staff and vendors; develops standards and processes to automate, streamline and increase the speed of delivering IT service in a useable and customer friendly way.

Given the broad range of skills and knowledge needed in these areas, some specific tasks and duties vary based on work assignment.

  • SERVER -Administers centralized IT services including Microsoft Active Directory (applications, accounts, files, printers, security policies…), e-mail, database, web filtering and desktop automation.

The work assignment for this position will be primarily SERVER focused. These are some of the projects that in the queue for this position; finishing up a VMware 5.5 install, planning for a VMware 6.x upgrade, planning and upgrading the AD domain to 2012, continuing work on Office 365 and Google Cloud integration and continuing work on Windows ADFS and SAML SSO Automation and migrating Windows Update Service to 2012.

Functions:

  • Implements, supports and maintains common network services (e.g. Ethernet and TCP/IP based networking, network management tools, Microsoft Active Directory and Web services) for the purpose of providing and maintaining a dependable, cost effective and standards based network.
  • Works directly with end users, IT staff and vendors for the purpose of providing second level support for PCs, peripherals, video conferencing and telephone devices, end user computing and communications equipment; implementing projects; performing system upgrades and resolving problems.
  • Manage, implement and monitor security practices to appropriately protect network infrastructure for the purpose of providing a safe and reliable network for staff and students.
  • Design, install, configure, monitor, maintain, and document consistent and reliable system backups for the purpose of supporting disaster recovery, change management and end-user file recovery.
  • Assist district leadership as needed with investigations of user activity and use of the district network resources for the purpose of helping the district meet local, state and federal legal requirements for information gathering and discovery; and identifying violations of district policy.
  • Maintains a high level of technical knowledge for the purpose of providing the most efficient services to the district.
  • Server- Design, install, configure, secure, monitor, maintain, document, backup and repair the district’s server hardware, software and application infrastructure (e.g. physical and virtual hardware, operating systems and disk storage, MS Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, file and print servers; centralized processes and services for network, server and desktop applications; centralized e-mail, database ,spam filter and web filter) for the purpose of providing and maintaining a dependable, cost effective and standards based network.
  • Models the District’s and Network Team’s core mission, vision and values for the purpose of creating an efficient and effective working environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned for the purpose of providing and maintaining a dependable, cost effective and standards based network; and to help the district succeed in its mission. –

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes:
  • Thorough working knowledge of Ethernet, TCP/IP, routing and switching, OSI communications model;
  • Familiar with packet filtering, protocol analysis, and firewall security concepts; Knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of current network operating systems (Windows, Linux);
  • Understanding of network services, computer applications, operating systems and desktop computers in a Microsoft Active Directory environment and how they interrelate;
  • Server hardware; Familiar with computer environmental system needs; System backup practices; DOS Batch programming; Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) and Extensible Markup Language (XML); Computer security practices;

Working Environment:

  • The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 65% sitting, 5% walking, and 30% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

  • Expertise to perform multiple highly complex technical tasks.

Experience:

  • Job related experience is required.
  • Server: two years verifiable experience working in an enterprise Microsoft Active Directory environment.

Education:

  • Community College and/or Vocational School degree with study in job related area.

Required Testing:

  • None Specified

Certificates & Licenses:

  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License with driving record acceptable to District.
  • Server: Current Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA); additional Microsoft certifications preferred (SQL, Exchange, etc.).

Continuing Education/Training:

  • Must maintain valid Washington State Driver’s License and driving record acceptable to District.

Clearances:

  • Washington State Patrol and FBI Fingerprint Background Clearance
