Museum Education Programs Interpreter

Reports to: Interpretive Programs Coordinator

Compensation: Grade Level 5; Basic benefits

Seasonal, hourly, non-exempt position

Seasons: June thru Labor Day, December+ based on business need

General Function

T he Museum Interpreter will be an outgoing, people-oriented individual who enjoys working with and helping the public in a cultural setting enhancing our guest’s visitor experience. They will be responsible in assisting with the public and visitors in the educational program deliverable areas of the Museum. The Museum Interpreter will implement educational presentations and activities primarily to onsite-and some offsite-groups, and present interpretive programs and demonstrations based on the Museum’s themes. As time allows, they will also provide coverage for other education staff. The Museum Interpreter will also provide facilitated experiences and act as museum hosts and goodwill ambassadors at various functions and offsite promotional venues.

Qualifications

Education : Must at least 16 years old currently attending High School or possess a High School Diploma, or GED.

Experience: Experience in education, museum, camp environment, daycare, organized youth groups or theater activities.

Licensing/Certifications: None

Knowledge and Skills:

· Strong interpersonal skills and written communication skills

· Ability to work with a variety of people, including visitors, program participants, and volunteers

· Knowledge of aviation, astronomy, robotics, and/or aerospace science or history preferred

· An understanding of basic audio visual equipment including video conferencing tools

Museum Specific Qualifications:

· At the time of job offer a candidate must be able to pass a criminal background check.

· Must have a flexible schedule to accommodate working days and hours based on either or both the season and program services.

Essential Job Functions

1. Interact with visitors and guests providing strong customer service and knowledge about our educational programs.

2. Responsible for presenting and enhancing creative interpretive activities.

3. Adhere to oral and written instructions for individual presentations and activities as assigned.

4. Works independently and within a team environment in delivering interpretive activities.

5. On a daily basis this position will provide presentations and present activities to audiences of all sizes and ages.

6. Participate in Museum-wide and department-wide events, training and meetings.

7. Participate as required in promotional off-site events.

8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Condition

This seasonal position’s weekly work schedule may vary both in number of hours and days worked based on the season and/or needs of the Education Department. Based on need, occasionally extra hours may be needed; a ny additional hours worked over 40 per week must be preauthorized by your supervisor.

Physical Requirements:

· Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required

· Must have the ability to work up to 8 hours and more on one’s feet

· This position’s work environment includes working both inside the Museum and outdoors
