The Incumbent is under the immediate supervision of the Warehouse Supervisor, located within Logistics Service at the VA Medical Center (VAMC) in Battle Creek, Michigan. Area assigned is Material Management Section of Logistics Service working from 8am-4:30pm or as assigned. Incumbent will be required to use power tools, hand tools, dollies, and other tools of the trade to accomplish assigned tasks. The instructions and assignments are verbal and/or written, and assignments are on a day-to-day basis in accordance with trip tickets, or a regular recurring run may be assigned. While on the road, is without immediate supervision. The Incumbent of this position must be able to competently operate vehicles up to 26,000lb trucks equipped with power tailgates.

The Incumbent is responsible for preventive maintenance of vehicles to which assigned. The Incumbent also:

Inspects vehicle for safety, fuel supply water supply, tires, etc., and makes minor road repairs as necessary. Records pertinent information of trips on trip tickets and reports any difficulty or unusual occurrences. Must be able to determine the heights, widths, and weights that items can be stacked on pallets and bounds (tie downs) to prevent tripping, crushing, or any other type of damage.

Is responsible for keeping assigned vehicles clean and in proper condition. Responsible for the safe operation of vehicles, since any infraction of rules or regulations, traffic laws, or safety requirements could result in serious injury to passengers and/or loss or damage of Government property. Incumbent must be able to store, stack and palletize items considering their end use, size of container, shape, quantity, and possible contamination to/from other items.

Must have knowledge of proper use of power tailgate and truck load capacity. The incumbent must have the necessary leadership qualities to lead lower-grade employees in the accomplishment of his/her assigned duties. May drive a regularly scheduled run, or drive in accordance with trip tickets assigned on a day-to-day basis. May need to drive to Outpatient Clinics and other VA Medical Centers.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Schedule may vary as deemed necessary to meet the needs of the Veterans and the Medical Center.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is Ability to do the job of a Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

1.Knowledge of the operation of motor vehicles.

2.Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. includes reading maps (related to mobile equipment operation.)

3.Ability to drive safely (motor vehicles)

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS : You will load and unload cargo and direct seating arrangement of passengers, assist in lifting and carrying supplies hauled, and arranges load in the vehicles to provide proper weight distribution for safety. You are required to lift, carry push heavy articles while loading and unloading cargo. You are expected to lift and move objects weighing over 50 pounds (and often up to 100 pounds or more.)

WORKING CONDITIONS : You are required to work under various weather and road conditions, to operator snow plow and sand/salt spreader during icy and snowy conditions, and to run power tailgate on trucks in all kinds of weather conditions
