Mechanical Engineer

FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) is seeking candidates for a Mechanical Engineer to participate in a variety of projects with HBOI researchers.

Responsibilities will include the following:
Perform project management tasks including project scheduling, workflow, resource management, cost estimates and testing.

Collaborate with external groups and agencies on complex systems and deployments.

Write proposals and contribute to the development and preparation of technical content for proposals and manuscripts.

Design and develop advanced mechanical assemblies. Perform vital mechanical engineering calculations and analysis using state-of-the-art software tools.

Develop proposal level drawings and renderings as well as system level design and fabrication level drawings.

Develop design and procurement specifications. Procure and expedite supplies, equipment and services.

Coordinate the interface between machine shop, mechanical designers and weld shop fabrication activities. Successfully complete projects within schedule and budgets.

Monitor and report to program manager on progress made by other engineers and technicians.

Develop test plans as well as operations and deployment plans and procedures.

Maintain proper documentation of development, operation and repair.

Assemble complex sensor systems and perform sensor calibrations and sensor system maintenance. Will also troubleshoot sensors and sensor networks in the field.

Support scientific researchers by performing basic computer programming, electrical assembly and technician level tasks.

Perform scientific diving support as needed.

This position is located in Ft. Pierce, FL and is anticipated to be a 24 month appointment with possibility for extension based on externally funded projects.

Minimum Qualification:
Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Ocean Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university and five years applicable experience required.

Experience in two or more of the following is preferred: 3D CAD using AutoDesk Inventor, Solidworks or equivalent; programs such as Windows, MS Office, Adobe Acrobat; design of oceanographic instrumentation and/or underwater vehicles; and engineering analysis tools such as Finite Element Analysis or Computational Fluid Dynamics.

Optic engineering and underwater optics skills preferred.

Experience with Project Management software as well as programming in LabVIEW, MATLAB and C/C++ preferred.

Familiarity with mechanical design and machining techniques is preferred.

Candidate must be a motivated self-starter who is capable of working independently as well as in a team environment.

Must be able to travel. Sea time may be required.

Must have a valid Florida Driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
