Mechanical Engineer

The Information Technology Department has an opening for a Mechanical Engineer. This position is located in Phoenix, Arizona.

Position Purpose

This role operates maintains, repairs, and performs maintenance on all mechanical and piping, equipment and other infrastructure equipment in the data center. The Mechanical Engineer also monitors systems and is first responder to alarms, failures and emergencies associated with the critical power infrastructure systems in the data center. This position is responsible for making quick and critical decisions in emergencies

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Responsible staff member on shift performs shift and site monitoring at time when no other staff is on site, first responder in an equipment failure situation.

• Performs preventive maintenance as directed by facility engineering management per scheduled maintenance program. Equipment to Chillers, pumps, cooling towers, fans air handlers, CRAC units, valves and other related piping and systems and water treatment.

• Performs operations rotations of equipment using BMS and manual overrides to bring systems on in an emergency.

• Performs chiller tube maintenance, strainers cleaning.

• Performs repairs, rebuilds pumps, replaces motors on mechanical systems, replaces valves, welds solder and brazes pipe in refrigeration, chilled water and other HVAC and subsystems.

• Maintains humidifier systems in the facility. Assists other engineering staff in the installation repair or other related work involving the building monitoring system

• Assists other trades in the operation of the electrical power distribution system for maintenance or in an emergency to restore power

• Escorts contractors to secure locations works with contractors in completing repairs and or maintenance of various power distribution equipment.

• Maintains building documents, drawings, operating manuals and procedures, equipment PM program, records and all other logs, records and history files related to the electrical equipment infrastructure

Qualifications:

• Associate, Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering or maintenance or competition of formal trade, technical, military school training.

• 4 – 10 year’s practical experience in large commercial facility or data center.

• Mechanical HVAC chiller/central plant systems engineering and maintenance operations.

• Journeyman Commercial HVAC/ Pipefitter license preferred.

• Excellent verbal and written communications.

• Minimum 4 – 10 years’ experience: HVAC, mechanical central plant operating engineer, mechanic, operating engineer.

• Exceptional skills in the operation and maintenance of all mechanical systems infrastructure equipment and other related systems in Data Centers following industry data center best practices for a Tier III and IV Data Centers.

• Proven understanding of the level of urgency associated with preventative, diagnostic and repair maintenance, best practices, policies and procedures

• HVAC – Journeyman knowledge in commercial mechanical/HVAC theory, application, testing and trouble shooting and maintenance of DX equipment, central plant chilled water, centrifugal chillers to 500 tons, large capacity pumps, water systems, piping, fan systems, air distribution, raised floor air conditioning systems/chilled water (CRAC) and humidification.

• Building control and management and monitoring systems design operation, temperature controls operation and application.

• Performs operation, maintenance data center best practices, engineering, trouble shooting

• Working knowledge of diesel engines and generator sets and PLC parallel switchgear used as emergency back up power systems in data centers, knowledge of diesel fuel and maintenance of fuel systems.

• Electrical –Knowledge of power distribution systems to 600 volts, circuit breakers, VFD’s, wiring, schematics, electrical motors, relays and electrical controls used in the HVAC trade.

• Able to use meters, tools and test equipment used in electrical system diagnostics.

• Strong ability to identify problems and develop solutions to correct.

• Knowledge of raised floor structure systems, mechanical and electrical infrastructure, rack systems placement and installation of hardware and cabling.

• Knowledge of preventative maintenance plans programs, documentation practices, scheduling, frequency, history recording and scheduling.

• Knowledge of maintenance practices as they apply to each individual component and system per OEM requirements.

• Additional preferred knowledge, training or experience:

o Local, state and federal, building, electrical, mechanical, fire and safety codes, N.E.C, ASHRE, NFPA, OSHA

o Windows, MS Office applications, power quality monitoring systems and software, Visio, AutoCAD

o Above average communication, scheduling and organizational skills.
