Maryland Transportation Design Project Engineer

The eligible candidate will perform a variety of tasks at the direction of the ATCS Vice President of Maryland Transportation and the ATCS Maryland Senior Transportation Manager.

The diversity of responsibilities and actual tasks to be done require a flexible mindset and cooperative team oriented attitude to support the rapid growth of the firm. This position will report to the Maryland Senior Transportation Manager who will assign tasks as appropriate. Specific activities that will likely be performed at this position include:

• Direct a small design team

• Manage subordinate staff in the performance of projects

• Generate the scope, schedule, and budget parameters for roadway design projects

• Develop and implement QA/QC plans for projects

• Manage the execution of projects within the approved scope, schedule, and budget

• Use Microstation and InRoads or GeoPak software as well as AutoCAD Civil 3D

• Prepare construction documents and specifications

• Prepare reports

• Manage subconsultants’ performance

• Clearly report project performance to the Senior Transportation Manager on a weekly basis through the generation and maintenance of project reporting documents

• Identify and resolve issues related to the performance of the project, such as assisting in the development of the supplemental scope, schedule, and budget requests

• Assist in project closeout.

• Assist in the identification and preparation of technical proposals for future work

• Mentor, train, and foster a team-oriented atmosphere among subordinates

• Arrange and conduct project field investigations during design or construction

• Maintain organized physical and electronic files.

Requirements

A candidate will be expected to direct others in performing or, in some case, self-perform designs for all types of roadways based on AASHTO, MSHA, or local municipalities design standards and criteria. Specific elements of design may include:

• Horizontal and vertical geometry

• Typical section development

• Cross section development

• Maintenance of traffic and sequencing of construction design

• Erosion and sediment control design

• Stormwater management design

• Hydraulic design of culverts, inlets, stormdrain pipes, and ditches.

• Coordinate with IT on software requirements

• Participate in professional society or association meetings

• Identify and report training needs for yourself and subordinates, including CADD training, other technical training, and beneficial industry certifications

• Accumulate experience applicable to Professional Engineer licensing requirements if not already licensed as a Professional Engineer

• BSCE or equivalent degree required

• Professional Engineers License (PE) in Maryland a plus

• 4-9 years of applicable roadway design and task-management experience in Maryland required

• Microstation and InRoads, or GeoPak experience required. AutoCAD Civil 3D experience a plus

• Thorough familiarity with AASHTO and MSHA design standards, practices, and policies is required.
