Machine Operator Assistant

Full Job Description

PURPOSE:

Ensure properly planned machine set up, organization of auxiliary materials, packaging, labeling, and documentation; according to quality and hygiene requirements, safety regulations, and customer specifications.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Machine Operation

  • Set up and operate specific machine units such as winding, slitting or packaging unit and change settings according to work orders; including the following items: enter order data into MES system, prepare core and other auxiliary materials, adjust template for knife settings, and print all supporting documents.
  • Label individual rolls, while inspecting rolls for quality
  • Package finished goods with the stretch wrapping machine, while inspecting packaging for quality
  • Compile samples from individual rolls, and label the samples
  • Obtain operating supplies and auxiliary materials from the warehouse
  • Prepare customer orders, and understand the requirements for each
  • Monitor production process to maintain optimal performance and quality
  • Prepare production paperwork and handover information regarding the current shift, to the oncoming shift. This should include information about the previous shift, current production order, lot changes planned for the next shift, malfunctions and measures taken to troubleshoot and repair.
  • Retract material if there is a disruption
  • Document data pertaining quality and production requirements, to facilitate an efficient process
  • Perform all duties according to safety, hygiene, and quality standards; outlined by company policy and customer specifications
  • Serve as a backup for the Machine Operator
  • Assist Machine Operators with the retraction of fibers and/or if there is a disruption
  • Maintenance

  • Regularly perform maintenance activities and cleaning activities on production equipment; including the floor, control panel, and finger guard at calendar unit
  • Maintain clean and tidy workplace to prepare for the production of upcoming orders
  • Maintain safe machine operation
  • Identify, substantiate, record, and report any malfunction
  • Once a malfunction has been repaired, test to ensure that machine function has been fully restored
  • Maintenance of knives and winding rods
  • Change calendar and machine settings, when using a different calendar
  • Maintain a clean and tidy workplace
  • Quality

  • Manual inspections of finished roll goods (dimensions, winding, etc.)
  • Compare finished goods to a reference sample to maintain quality and customer specifications
  • Take samples to the quality lab and carry out initial material testing at the production line; according to quality specifications
  • Set metal detectors and other inspection systems and the production line
  • Manual inspection of labelling to ensure that the correct data is on each label and the correct label is used
  • Manual inspection of packaging material on finished roll goods
  • Monitor and evaluate initial production runs of new materials
  • Working with test equipment (ie machine for testing tensile strength)
  • Entering information on all tasks into MES/ERP systems
  • Ensure that any out of specification findings are properly documented and given to the QA Specialist
  • Ensure that the required number of samples are received each shift for testing
  • Communicate with Quality Assurance Specialist regarding all testing processes, issues, and results
  • Ensure that the QMS conforms to ISO 9001:2015
  • Ensure processes are delivering intended outcomes
  • Report to Top Management on the performance of the QMS; on opportunities for improvement; on change requirements; on innovations
  • Ensure the promotion of customer focus
  • Ensure the integrity of the QMS is maintained
  • EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, & COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:

  • GED or High School Diploma required
  • Ability to perform basic math skills such as add/subtract/multiply/divide/percentage calculation
  • Minimum of 1-3 years experience working in a manufacturing environment, experience in nonwoven manufacturing and/or fibers, preferred
  • Experience using automated equipment, preferred
  • strong mechanical aptitude and problem solving skills preferred
  • Expertise in ERP/MES/SAP system, preferred
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, preferred
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and OSHA standards
  • Able to work in a 12h rotating shift system
  • Willingness to work evenings, night shifts, weekends, and holidays
  • Able to work independently and in a team
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Organized, thorough, and precise in conducting tasks
  • Willing and able to obtain additional qualifications and training
  • Willingness to learn and be coachable, concerning all job responsibilities
  • Experience operating a Powered Industrial Truck, Scissor Lift, and/or Boom Lift, preferred
  • Able to read and understand labels
