M of E Railcar Electrician

Railcar Electricians are responsible for the inspection, repair and maintenance of electrical components on diesel/electric and electric locomotives.

Duties to include:
Conduct Inspections of Locomotive Electrical Components: Perform scheduled electrical inspections in compliance with company and industry standards; inspect various small (relays, voltage regulators, rectifiers, solid state components, circuitry) and large components (traction motors, and motor alternators, inverters, transformers, HVAC, cab signals); inspect and test circuitry with electrical testing equipment (multi-meters, amp probe, laptop); inspect for unusual smells, overheating and small changes in the visual appearance of objects/materials.

Troubleshoot Malfunctions:
Diagnose electrical, electromechanical and electronic malfunctions in locomotive components; assess nature of problem and determine needed corrective action; including both high and low voltage equipment.

Perform Maintenance and Repair:
Repair or replace electrical, electromechanical and electronic components in the locomotive cab or electrical compartments (junction boxes, voltage regulators high voltage power supply unit, traction motor-propulsion systems); disassemble and clean electrical parts; assemble components; provide maintenance for miscellaneous equipment and facilities using blueprints, schematics, and location circuit plans.

Work with Shop Machines and Tools:
Safely and effectively operate high and low precision measuring instruments (micrometers, tape measures, and volt/ohm meters); electric, pneumatic and hydraulic tools (drills, wrenches, grinders); material handling equipment (lifts, cranes, and overhead hoists).

Practice Safe Work Habits:
Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices and procedures, wear prescribed safety apparel; take appropriate action when conditions threaten safety of self or co-workers; ensure equipment and work area are in safe operating condition before starting and at the completion of work.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:
High School Diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED), or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC).

Applicants must also possess one of the following requirements:

A minimum of two (2) years of full-time verifiable work experience as an Electrician, Electromechanical/Electronic or Automotive Technician or Maintainer;

An IBEW journeyman’s card;

Graduated from an approved trade or technical school, with a with a major course of study in Electrical, Electromechanical or Electronic Technology, totaling 600 hours;

Graduated from a four-year vocational high school, or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization, with a major course of study in Electrical, Electromechanical or Electronic Technology;

Graduated from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree, or higher degree, in Electrical, Electromechanical or Electronic Technology.

Rate of Pay

The starting rate of 65% for this position is equivalent to $22.33. The wage progression scale is as follows: Year 1=65% >Year 2=70% >Year 3=75% >Year 4=80% >Year 5=92% >Year 6=100%. The full rate of pay is $34.36/hour.

This salary is non-negotiable, based on the IBEW Collective Bargaining Agreement.

An exception may be granted for a journeyman rate to anyone who has one of the following:

A. Has completed a four-year, bona fide electrical apprenticeship program, OR

B. Has had four (4) years of full-time practical experience in the craft and can provide proof thereof (by means of a card or certificate), OR

C. Has graduated from a four-year college or university with a degree in electrical engineering, and has completed two years of bona fide full-time electrical apprenticeship program or has had two years of practical experience as an electrician.

For those approved for a journeyman rate, the wage progression scale is as follows: Year 1=80% >Year 2=85% >Year 3=100% of the full rate of pay.

Seniority

New employees will establish seniority in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union (IBEW), the union representing Electricians, in accordance with the union’s current collective bargaining agreement.

Members are subject to an initiation fee and monthly union dues.

Assignments

Must have the ability to work various hours, days, shifts and locations (Stamford and New Haven, CT; Croton Harmon, North White Plains and Brewster, NY).

Selection Criteria

Due to the competitive nature of the selection process, not all qualified candidates who meet the minimum requirements for the position are guaranteed an interview. Metro-North may also require the applicant to undergo a physical ability test, and, if the Company extends a conditional offer, may require him or her to undergo a medical examination, which may include toxicological testing. Failure to pass any step within the hiring process will result in the disqualification of your application.

Additional Criteria for Current Employees: Current Metro-North employees must be in active service to be eligible for consideration. Agreement Employees applying for a position outside of their present craft are required to have worked in your current union for at least one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline to be eligible to apply for a posted position, and have completed the agreed upon formal training commitment, including on-the-job training or lock-in requirement, if applicable (for example: Signal Trainee, Foreman-In-Training, etc.). If you are transferring to another craft, you may be required to forfeit your seniority in your present union. Non-agreement employees must have worked in your current position for a minimum of one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline. Along with a background investigation (including but not limited to, employment, education, and criminal history), employees are also subject to an internal investigation, which includes an evaluation not limited to discipline records and performance assessments.

Other Information

This is a safety sensitive position and subject to toxicology testing.

Details of physical activities include, but are not limited to:

Ability to lift and carry tools and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.

Must be able to climb steps and ladders to board equipment.

Details of working conditions include, but are not limited to:

Works in all areas of various shops including outside during inclement weather.

Works on rolling stock at heights up to 15 feet above ground level.

May work at heights up to 65 feet when performing shop maintenance.

As an employee of Metro-North Railroad you may be required to complete a New York State financial disclosure statement, if you earn more than $97,448.00 or if you hold a position designated as a policy maker.

Effective September 2017, all full-time non-agreement personnel other than those directly involved with the movement of trains or delivery of service, or assigned to other emergency response teams, are required to serve in the Station Terminal Auxiliary Response (STAR) program requiring Terminal coverage for Grand Central Terminal (GCT) from 4:30 PM-7:30 PM one week per year or responding to Station STAR duty during a service disruption, system-wide at various hours including nights and weekends. This program is designed to improve Metro-North’s ability to provide customer service during emergencies that impact service delivery or other service disruptions that require staff to provide directions and information to MNR customers at GCT or outlying stations. Please note, hours worked during your participation week are subject to change.
