Literacy Coordinator

Non Civil Service Position

Coordinates, administers and monitors an adult education program that provides for free tutoring and large group instruction for adults who lack skills in English proficiency or are pursuing their General Educational Development (GED) Certificate.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Works with Grants Coordinator to provide literacy program data for grant applications and reports to continue providing literacy programs to the community.

Prepares quantitative and qualitative data, statistical reports for funding agency and other reports as required by policy.

Works with Volunteer Coordinator to recruit and train volunteers to teach English as a Second Language classes or GED preparation classes.

Supervises the volunteer staff and works directly with literacy liaisons at each branch location offering the service.

Coordinates and communicates information to library staff and the community on programs and activities related to literacy; distributes flyers to promote and maintain interest in the literacy program.

Regular, reliable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in an education, social science, library science, arts or public administration field.

EXPERIENCE (must include all of the following):
One (1) year of experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of public outreach, recreational and/or social programs for adults.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of policies and procedures governing the literacy program.

Ability to conduct training workshops for prospective tutors.

Ability to plan and organize.

Ability to direct the work of others including volunteers.

Ability to keep records and maintain accurate files.

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees and the general public.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of people.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

MS Office or similar software skills.

Ability to organize information, and direct others.

Ability to work with diverse groups of individuals.

Equivalency(ies)

High school diploma or GED plus five (5) years of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements.

An associate’s degree in an education, social science, library science or public administration field. Plus three (3) years of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements. Preference(s)

Experience working with individuals from various communities, community boards or partner organizations is a plus.

Knowledge of the Library system.
