What You Will Do

The Information Systems & Modeling Group (A-1) is seeking a highly-motivated Linux System Administrator. A-1 provides information and systems modeling to support national leaders responsible for making decisions when threats occur and to assist them in mitigating threats before they occur.

As the successful candidate, you will configure and maintain critical Linux-based computing infrastructure needed for A-1 to deliver on programmatic work for customers in the Intelligence Community, Homeland Security, and national emergency response. You will develop technical solutions on Los Alamos National Laboratory’s computing infrastructure, as well as deploy and maintain distributed web-based systems in cloud computing environments (e.g., Amazon Web Services). This job will often require creativity, research, and implementation of unique solutions to utilize these emerging technologies.

Automation is a significant aspect of this role. You should be comfortable writing terminal scripts (e.g., in Bash or Python). You will use these skills to develop a wide range of tools for setting up and breaking down computing infrastructure on-demand, as well as developing tools for monitoring critical infrastructure for performance, reliability, and security.

This work will be conducted in collaboration with an energetic and highly skilled team that employs an agile development approach to address evolving system requirements. As the primary system administrator on this team, you will have many opportunities to design and hone a dynamic and complex distributed computing system.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience with Linux or UNIX.

  • Experience with IP networking, storage, and security.

  • Scripting experience in Bash, Python, or similar

  • Knowledge of software development methodologies, tools and processes, including software development methodology framework, source code control, application development tools and techniques, database design, development and management, programming languages, and component integration.

  • Knowledge of hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client server principles.

  • Knowledge of hardware and software integration and testing.

  • Knowledge of complex heterogeneous computing infrastructures.

  • Knowledge of emerging computing technologies in industry.

  • Knowledge of project management methodologies.

  • Knowledge of risk management assessments.

  • Ability to review and understand end-to-end work processes.

  • Ability to translate technical terms to layperson’s terms and present them to audiences outside of organization.

  • Skill in partnering/collaborating with customers and suppliers to define expectations and mutual responsibilities.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills demonstrated by the ability to present information and data to audiences.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with Cloud Platforms (e.g., Amazon Web Service), Virtualization (e.g., VMWare), and Containerization (e.g., Docker).

  • Experience writing, testing, and deploying complex custom scripts.

  • Experience in large scale environments like PXE, LDAP, NFS, server virtualization, deployments and automation or configuration management, modular user shell environments and networking.

  • Proficiency with source control, continuous integration, test, and deployment (Jenkins/Travis, Git/Gerrit).

  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP networking (DNS, DHCP, Proxies, SSH Tunnels, etc.)

  • In-depth knowledge of Linux internals and common UNIX daemons (i.e., syslogd, httpd, nfsd, sshd, etc.); understanding of networking and related protocols, configuration management.

  • Active Q clearance.

Education:

Position typically requires a BA/BS degree in Computer Science or related field or a minimum of two years equivalent practical experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Details:

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

A-Division conducts a broad range of analytical, technology development and application, and rapid-response activities in support of the Intelligence Community, Homeland Security, Defense and national emergency response organizations. Core capabilities in the division include: nuclear weapons technology assessment ; electromagnetic technology and applications; systems analysis; specialized technical training for emergency responders; sensor design and development; development and maintenance of customized, secure information systems; and analysis of export commodities and export-control practices for potential proliferation risks; research in cyber systems and cyber defense. The division groups are spread across multiple Technical Areas, with approximately 150 full-time employees. These activities present security challenges, spanning unclassified to TS/RD and SCI, and a full-range of safety hazards that must be thoroughly understood and mitigated, working in collaboration with support organizations, to enable effective mission execution.
