Under the general direction of the Curator of Avery Classics (rare books), the incumbent administers daily operations in the Avery Classics Reading Room, registering readers, approving requests, and ensuring the security of material by providing surveillance of readers using valuable books, manuscripts, and unbound graphics and ephemera. Pages, shelves, and maintains stack oversight for Classics materials. Pre-order searches CLIO and WorldCat for materials in CLIO, WorldCat, the Avery Card Catalog, and KVK for rare monographs, serials, and ephemera for the Curator of Avery Classics. Physically processes Classics materials, including: flagging, stamping and measuring for and placing in acid-free enclosures. Maintains Classics bibliographic records in CLIO. Handles online requests, email correspondence, mailing/shipping of rare materials. Processes reader photography and publication requests. Assists Curator with support for class instruction and preparation of materials for exhibition and loan. Other duties as assigned.

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 9 am – 5 pm

Minimum Qualifications for Grade

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant

  • Reading knowledge of French, Italian, or German required (language test will be given at time of interview)
  • Ability to handle bibliographic citations in a variety of Western European languages
  • Ability to work well with computers
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be able to lift and carry heavy objects up to 40 lbs and climb ladders
  • Ability and judgement to exercise extreme care when working with rare and fragile materials
  • Strong attention to detail

Special Instructions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Previous library experience highly preferred
  • Experience working with special collections preferred
  • Basic knowledge/coursework in architectural history highly desirable
