Lead Software Engineer – Cobol

Job Overview:

The Lead Software Engineer- Operations and Support will be responsible for supporting and solving escalated application core issues (break fix) across the digital support services offered. This position will be responsible for providing solutions that include solving the current user experience, application messaging component delivery, and mainframe application issues. Additional responsibilities will include leading operations development meetings, collaborating with management to determine priorities, participation in on-call rotations while being an advisor to less experienced level developers as it relates to decision-making/code changes needed to improve systems stability and application performance and reliability issues. Perform other duties as assigned.

Development Function:

This job function is responsible for collaborating with business product owner’s regarding solving functional and technical system requirements. This will include providing guidance to Software development engineers and testers as needed. In this position you will be responsible for interfacing with internal customers and business partners to determine the most efficient and cost-effective approach to meet their Operations business requirements. This will include detailed discussion for designing, developing, testing, installing, and deploying required software applications. These break fix solutions will include new code construction, modifications to existing modules, configuration and/or package implementation.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform coding/configuration, testing, implementation and documentation on solutions developed including design specifications.
  • Perform applications programming activities, to include code, test, debug, document, maintain, and modify applications programs.
  • Monitor the application for operating efficiency and performance stability in order to provide (or arrange) proactive maintenance.
  • Lead and propose a solution to complex application issues.
  • Serve as a coach and mentor to less experience developers and delegate tasks as appropriate.
  • Commit to overall deliverables with customers and/or management.
  • Support the evaluation and recommendation of new technical directions and approaches to management.
  • Regular, dependable attendance & punctuality.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and/or Engineering preferred and 5+ years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of software development experience is required.
  • 5+ years of Cobol and DB2 are required.
  • 5+ years of CICS, JCL.
  • 5+ years of MQ Messaging.
  • Order Management knowledge and experience a plus.
  • Experience with migration from mainframe to java platform a plus.
  • 1+ year experience with pub/sub messaging tools such as JMS, EMS a plus.
  • 3+ years of experience supporting multiple application environments with high level of complexity (e.g. many interfaces, multiple packages) is required.
  • 3+ years of experience in providing analysis to customers / business analysts on proposed solutions, working with the customers, business analysts and other colleagues as appropriate to develop a solution that provides a balance between performance, and customer service.

Communication Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with Senior Management and key business partners.
  • Enjoys working collaboratively with teams on Operations technical and functional process improvements.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to perform solid analysis/troubleshooting to determine code and process inefficiencies.
  • Ability to consider options and make decisions to improve user functionality.
  • Independently identifies, defines, and performs analysis to resolve code issues.

Physical Demands:

  • Regular – walking, standing, sitting, hearing, seeing, talking, using hand and fingers for writing, typing and using a mouse, moving/lifting items under 10 pounds.
  • Occasional – stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • May also involve close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

Work Hours:

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
