Land Surveyor (Region Land Surveyor)

The Region Land Surveyor oversees and verifies surveying practices and documentation and establishes property boundaries and project controls for highway construction projects in an assigned geographical region of the state. Duties may include, but are not limited to overseeing the establishment and installation of primary horizontal and vertical control points, creating appropriate digital files and informing area staff of primary control data; conducting research of previous highway plans, historical survey notes and plats, aerial photos, plats and deeds, and corner records; locating property corner markers previously set and reestablishing those that are not found; evaluating and analyzing boundary data and creating Microstation files of land tie survey data; preparing corner records and plats; re-establishing post construction right-of-way, section, quarter section corners, and property corners; and evaluating and recommending acquisition of survey equipment and overseeing expenditures.

A valid driver license is required.

Work assignments are frequently performed outside in all weather conditions. For the most part the incumbent works alone, often in remote areas.

This position is typically scheduled for four 10-hour work days per week.

Licenses and Certifications:

Must be licensed as a Land Surveyor by the South Dakota Board of Technical Professions. Only candidates with this licensure will be considered.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Experience in boundary surveying is preferred.

Knowledge of:

  • current survey practices (GPS, robotic total station);
  • principles, theories, and practices of highway or road engineering (preferred but not required);
  • Trimble survey equipment and software (preferred but not required);
  • Microstation and Inroads applications (preferred but not required).

Skill to:

  • use a computer and operate Microsoft software;
  • operate current survey equipment.

Ability to:

  • display high standards of ethical conduct;
  • treat customers courteously and be responsive to their needs;
  • work cooperatively with others and promote a friendly work climate in order to achieve shared goals;
  • display a high level of effort and commitment towards completing assignments and goals;
  • attend to all details of assignments and complete work properly, accurately, and thoroughly;
  • safely move, drag, and lift 35 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally (without assistance);
  • walk, sit and stand for extended periods of time;
  • walk long distances over many kinds of terrain: animals, reptiles, and insects are a factor;
  • routinely climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
