Laboratory Technologist (Renal Pathology Lab)

The Laboratory Technologist will work in Renal Histopathology Laboratory performing a wide range of histology techniques including but not limited to tissue processing, embedding; tissue sectioning including paraffin and frozen, and EM electron microscopy(EM)ultrathin sections; staining (H&E, specials, IHC, and IF) and coverslipping. The incumbent will analyze, resolve, and trouble-shoot day-to-day laboratory tasks as needed, as well as facilitate trouble shooting and resolution of routine technical issues.

He/She will also assist in setting up, evaluating, and trouble-shooting new techniques, policies and procedures and assist in the training of new hires and other Support Staff employees.

The technologist will assess and maintain laboratory equipment i.e. tissue processors, stainers, coverslippers, solvent recyclers, and other related equipment. The incumbent will successfully carry out and maintain QA/QC policies and procedures. The incumbent will also maintain statistical records and other related records pertaining to the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications for Grade

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant

Master’s Degree plus 3 years of related experience or a BA/BS plus 6 years of related experience or equivalent in education, training, and experience.

Must have New York State Department of Education Clinical Lab Technician/Technologist or Histology Technician license.

Additional Position-Specific Minimum Qualifications

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant

MUST HAVE paraffin MICROTOMY SKILLS.

Computer skills required.

MUST DEMONSTRATE EXCELLENT INTERPERSONAL AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS.

Ability to work in an organized manner in accordance with established regulations, policies and procedures. Must have experience with highly complex laboratory equipment and/or computer applications. Must be able to work independently and under limited supervision. Must have specialized theoretical understanding and practical experience in a particular area of research.

HT/ HTL (ASCP) registered or registration eligible.

EM slides preparation sectioning.

Essential Functions

60%- Tissue processing, embedding, tissue sectioning

(paraffin and frozen) , staining ( H&E, specials, IHC, IF), and coverslipping. Analyzes, resolves, and trouble-shoots day-to-day histology tasks as needed.

10%- Facilitates trouble-shooting and resolution of routine technical issues.

10%- Effectively trouble-shoots and maintains laboratory equipment, which includes all types of equipment, such as the following examples: Tissue processors, stainers, coverslippers, solvent recyclers, and other related equipment.

5%- Assists in setting up, evaluating, and trouble-shooting new techniques.

5%- Assists in the training of new hire and other supporting staff.

5%- Successfully carries out and maintains QA/QC procedures as per policy and procedures. Maintains statistical records and other related records pertaining to the laboratory.

5%- Perform other duties as assigned.
