JUVENILE PROBATION OFFICER

UNCLASSIFIED POSITION IN JUVENILE COURT

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor degree in a Behavioral Science (Psychology, Sociology), Criminal Justice, or a related field and two (2) years of experience working in a juvenile justice system or a related area (Counseling experience is preferred);(one (1) year of lead or supervisory experience is preferred);or a year for year interchange of indicated education and experience equal to the minimum qualifications

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:
Valid State of Georgia driver’s license or proof of mobility equivalent may be requested.

EXAMINATION:
The examination process will include the following: application review and evaluation to a rating as to reflect Qualified or Not Qualified. Application must document that the applicant possesses the minimum knowledge, skills, education and experience as listed. If selected, an official, accredited college transcript is required, at time of employment, for all degrees/course work used to qualify for this position.

JOB SUMMARY/ DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS/ ESSENTIAL DUTIES/ (REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE) KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Incumbent in this class performs duties related to monitoring an assigned caseload of juveniles who become involved with or subject to the intervention of the Juvenile Court System. Responsibilities include conducting juvenile needs assessments; providing individual, family, or group counseling to ensure compliance with court orders; and providing lead direction to assigned staff. This is the first level within a four-level juvenile probation classification series. Juvenile Probation Officer is distinguished from Juvenile Probation Officer, Supervisor in that the former monitors an assigned caseload of juveniles in addition to providing lead direction to staff, whereas the latter exercises full supervisory authority over assigned staff in addition to monitoring case management guidelines, conducting caseload reviews, and providing staff training. Conducts juvenile needs assessment to determine the appropriate services required for social intervention, prevention of further involvement with the court system, and reduction of risk to the community. Provides lead direction to assigned staff, including establishing workloads, prioritizing work assignments, monitoring employee performance, interpreting policies and procedures, and resolving staff issues. Provides individual, family, or group counseling as needed to ensure compliance with court orders and ensures progressive efforts toward rehabilitation and prevention. Schedules, prepares, and presents juvenile cases for court. Conducts interviews and legal, social, and custody investigations of juveniles and prepares reports to be utilized by Assistant District Attorneys, Public Defenders, court-appointed attorneys, and judges. Recommends individualized action plans for dispositional phases of court hearings. Identifies witnesses, victims, and other relevant individuals and prepares and executes subpoenas, summonses, and other legal documents. Provides testimony in court. Conducts in-depth investigations on custody court matters referred by Fulton County Superior Court and conducts home investigations requested by Juvenile Court. Identifies available community resources designed to meet the needs of children and families referred to Juvenile Court. Prepares monthly reports on the status of juvenile cases. Ensures that court cases and diversionary cases are calendared within mandated time limits. Transports juveniles as required. Provides crisis counseling and mediates family or interpersonal conflicts. Monitors clients’ school and work attendance and participation in resource programs. Principles and practices of supervision; Criminal and juvenile laws and codes; Theories and principles of counseling related to the juvenile justice system; Court practices and procedures; Principles and practices of customer service; Legal terminology, including terminology related to the juvenile justice system; Theories and principles of childhood and adolescent development/behavior; Theories and principles of sociology, psychology, and/or criminal justice; Methods and techniques used to conduct child/adolescent counseling and mental health evaluations; Methods and techniques used to conduct interviews with juveniles; Principles and practices of legal case management related to juvenile justice; Community resources/programs associated with children/adolescents; Personal computers and related software. Providing lead direction to staff; Organizing and prioritizing work; Using investigative and mediation techniques; Performing effective legal case management; Preparing and presenting oral and written communications/reports; Providing effective customer service; Providing child/adolescent and family counseling; Conducting effective interviews with juveniles; Operating a motor vehicle; Reading maps and symbols; Performing effective crisis intervention; Operating personal computers, including spreadsheet, database, word processing, presentation, and other related software; Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other County personnel, officials, and the general public; Communication and interpersonal techniques as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc., sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
