Jr. Development Operations Engineer – FlightStats – Portland, Oregon

FlightStats is looking for a Jr Development Operations Engineer to become a critical member of one of our product teams. The product teams develop and maintain our web properties (including FlightStats.com), our mobile applications, and internal applications that convert raw data from hundreds of sources into a data product usable by internal teams and external customers alike. As a member of this team, you will help build and refine systems to support the availability, development, testing, and continuous deployment of applications that are in use every day.

Our ideal candidate has experience in most or all of the following:

creating reliable, Ubuntu Linux-based systems, with monitoring, redundancy, HA, and DR capabilities
physical & virtual server hardware, OS platforms, tool selection (VMware, AWS, containers)
web servers, proxies, and SSL (nginx, haproxy, apache/httpd)
writing scripts to automate simple tasks (python, bash, cURL, etc.)
collaborating with an inter-disciplinary, Agile team to identify, prioritize, and execute tasks
system health & performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and remediation, including visualization tools such as graphite, New Relic, Nagios/Icinga, datadog etc.

Experience with the following, while not required, would be a plus:

applying CI/CD methodologies and revision control using associated tools (e.g. Jenkins, git, REST)
maintaining scalable, redundant, and replicated data systems including, but not limited to, Postgresql RDBMS, mysql, and various nosql and data caching platforms
automating unix system provisioning and configuration using tools such as Puppet, Saltstack, Docker, or Ansible in public and private cloud environments like VMWare and AWS
identifying and implementing best practices by collaborating with other DevOps engineers
basic IP/CIDR networking
knowledge of Java ecosystem, build tools, Java EE, and containers

While experience is certainly important, our ideal candidate would also share in our enthusiasm for building, maintaining, and optimizing great software.

Your background includes:

A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or a related technical field), engineering or equivalent work experience

This position does require working out of our office located in Downtown Portland, Oregon
