Junior Designer

The Family of Natural History Museums of Los Angeles is leveraging insights from the science of the past to imagine a brighter future. To deliver this, we are building a design and digital organization that brings a visitor-centered approach across all our three campuses (Exposition Park/Downtown LA, La Brea Tar Pits/Mid-Wilshire and The Hart Museum/Newhall). A Junior Designer assists with the execution of projects from research to production, working in a team environment. Supports many projects at one time, supervised/led by a Senior Designer or Design Manager. Performs creative technical work; sketches or visualization of designs that develop concepts and details under close supervision. Contributes to gathering research for potential application in concept visualization support, project delivery and/or execution.

Responsibilities

Acquires working knowledge in one or more core areas

Carries out routine tasks on the basis of expertise in the core area

Supports concept visualization tasks

Drafts concept visualization and presentations

Exhibits technical skills to review and resolve basic problems

Performs assignments that have clear and specified objectives

Contributes to concept visualization and builds/develops standards

Identifies problems and develops creative solutions for implementation. Initiates required changes and executes

Uses moderate exercise of judgment in making selections and adaptations of concept visualization alternatives

Observes and promotes all accessibility requirements and follows sustainability guidelines

Experience/Education

Generally requires 0-2 years related experience

University/Bachelor’s degree in the field of design or equivalent required

Basic experience with cross-platform (Mac & PC) software applications and document management

Required Skills and Abilities

100% hands-on design/production work.

Applies sound concept visualization principles to the solution of basic problems.

Builds up knowledge and experience in one design or technical core area.

Assigned Mentor for development.

Applies acquired skills in tasks and assignments successfully. Demonstrates successful transition from the academic environment to the workplace.

Innovation led through challenging existing processes and/or methodologies

Design Disciplines/ Core Areas

Software: Adobe Creative Suite (knowledgeable)

Media: Adobe After Effects (knowledgeable)

3D/Way finding/Experience Design: Understanding of journey mapping/Signage programming

Digital: Basic knowledge of Google, Social and engagement platform development, with HTML/CSS (benefit)

Retail: Basic space planning/retail story creation

2D/Brand Design: Fundamental understanding (benefit)

Process: Fundamental understanding (benefit)
