Summary Description

SSSM seeks a Part-Time Junior Accountant with experience in general Accounting & Bookkeeping, with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to join the Museum’s Operations/Administrative team.

The Junior Accountant will be a key member of the Operations/Admin team and will be responsible for: maintaining our in house financial records, including purchases, sales, receipts and payments.

Hourly Rate: $20.00 per hour

Time Commitment: 16 hours per week, occasional night and/or weekend events required

Reports to: Director of Operations & Office Manager

Duties Include:

  • Work within established bookkeeping & accounting system to assist in reconciling for financial transactions by working within the established chart of accounts; defining bookkeeping policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the management of Accounts Payable
  • Recording day to day financial transactions and completing the posting process. Receives, approves, and, when necessary, investigates client’s accounts payable invoices.
  • Working with the Museum’s accounting firm to help prepare financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying requirements; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing reports; advising management on needed actions.
  • Deposit accounts receivables into client bank accounts.
  • Assists accountants on tax return preparation & audits.
  • Prepares appropriate schedules and reports as requested by clients and partners.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned from time to time by accountants or partners.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 1 year accounting or bookkeeping experience, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger and financial reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in a deadline based environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and willingness to work with a diverse community
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Comfortable interacting with museum staff and VIPs
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, under minimal supervision
  • Proficient computer skills including experience with databases and MS Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements of processing payroll accounting transactions and payroll returns.
  • Knowledge of computerized accounting, but must be able to do a manual set of books.
  • An interest in the nonprofit sector
  • Must be able to keep client matters strictly confidential.
  • BS degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration
