ITS Internship Program

ITS Arizona is sponsoring an internship program to help provide on-the-job experience and mentoring to an aspiring professional in the transportation and technology disciplines. For 2017, the intern program will be supporting one internship position. ITS Arizona will administer the program, including assistance with the selection and placement of the intern

NOTE: $15.00 per hour/ not to exceed $10,000 for the duration of the internship.

Internship program begins after July 1, 2017 and will not exceed 35 weeks.

This position will perform technical and skilled paraprofessional traffic engineering work involving traffic studies and surveys, development review, and drafting design under the supervision of the Principal Engineer. In addition to responsibilities at the City of Glendale, the selected intern will be expected to fulfill the following commitments on behalf of ITS AZ: Attend and observe ITS AZ Board Meetings, which are held monthly. Prepare and deliver an industry relevant presentation at one event of the sponsoring organization (ITS AZ). A presentation abstract will be submitted to each organization’s Board of Directors for approval.

Selected candidate will be required to submit proof of enrollment and under a background check prior to hire.

Essential Functions:

  • Learn the role that transportation/traffic engineers play in a professional working environment.
  • Evaluation of traffic signal timing and other (Intelligent Transportation Systems) ITS related functions.
  • Assists with responding to, investigating, and resolving citizen complaints and requests related to traffic engineering issues or services.
  • Prepares written work requests in AutoCAD to install or modify traffic control devices.
  • May perform traffic accident analyses, speed studies, school zone studies and other traffic and parking studies; utilizes ArcGIS to prepare and analyze traffic accident reports.
  • Prepares written reports on neighborhood traffic issues and other traffic concerns.
  • Develops and prepares engineering reports and recommendations for changes to city streets; develops and prepares four-way stop warrants.
  • Identifies need for new signs based on MUTCD Standard Highway Signs.
  • Performs other transportation related duties as assigned both in-office and in the field.
  • Minimum Qualifications & Special Requirements:

    • Enrolled in a bachelor’s program with an engineering emphasis and an interest in transportation/traffic engineering
    • Have a 3.0 or above GPA
    • 2-year minimum completed toward engineering degree
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Well-developed analytical and organizational skills
    • Strong preference given to candidates from in-state institutions

    Have an interest in:

    Theory and principles of transportation and traffic engineering design and implementation;

    Basic methods and practices of traffic engineering studies and surveys;

    Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and its application to Traffic Engineering functions;

    ArcGIS Software;

    Various computerized drafting programs such as AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite.

    Ability to:

    Perform computer aided drafting assignments;

    Use computers and software related to traffic engineering programs, counts, and surveys;

    Establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, outside contractors and developers, utility companies, and the general public;

    Effectively communicate verbally and in writing;

    Analyze situations, develop recommendations, and produce written and oral reports;

    Review plans for safe and effective traffic control devices and monitor for compliance.

    Special Requirements

    Valid Arizona driver’s license.

    Should be able to work at least 15 hours per week.

    Physical Requirements:

    Requires some lifting of up to 50 pounds, walking on busy roadways, and may involve placement of traffic count equipment. Inspections or work in roadways requires adherence to safety precautions.
