IT Specialist (Network/Systems)

    Duties

    Summary

    This position is located in the Cooper Heweitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (CHSDM). The employee reports to the Director of Digital & Emerging Media, the Information Technology Manager is responsible for the Enterprise Application Management, IT Customer Service & Support, and General Network Management and Security. Additionally, is responsible for budgeting, procurement and property management of all IT related software and equipment; oversees development, deployment and maintenance of Cooper Hewitt’s IT infrastructure and desktop support needsl supports the Digital & Emerging Media (DEM’s) mission of delivering strategic and technology based goals across all digital platforms and0 systems and plays a key role in realizing the vision of the museum from an IT point of view.

    An opportunity to serve as the IT Manager for Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. The applicant is responsible for managing all IT support systems for the museum and must be proficient in both MAC and PCs.

    Responsibilities

    • Oversees all aspects of Cooper Hewitt’s enterprise applications and related systems.
    • Manages, maintains and updates to enterprise grade constituent relationship management application (CRM); systems and services include Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), Microsoft SQL Server.
    • Supports the Director of Digital & Emerging Media in providing museum visitors an enriched experience through the use of technology both in the physical museum and online.
    • Communicates relevant museum-wide systems & services maintenance schedules, updates and changes to internal stakeholders.
    • Manages procurement, installation, configuration, and deployment of computer systems including Windows and Macintosh computers, and all office equipment and systems.
    • Administers Local Area Network and all devices connected to it, including desktop and laptop computers, copiers, environmental monitoring systems and IP telephony.
    • Manages network systems design, development, testing, installation, operations, management, and maintenance concepts and methodologies, network architecture, topologies and protocols.
    • Manages installation and management of servers, and oversees rooms in which onsite physical servers reside.
    • Manages inventory and property system for all IT related equipment for the Museum.
    • Plans, schedules, and develops the annual budget that supports Information Technology.
    • Manage and resolve issues with both MAC and PCs museum wide.

    Special Conditions: Due to the customer service nature of the position, work hours are 9:00AM to 5:30PM. May be required to work evenings or weekends. In addition to regular working hours, the IT Manager is expected to be "on call" and able to remotely access and administer all systems and services from outside the Smithsonian.

    Qualifications

    Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.

    For this position Specialized experience is defined as oversee and manage Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), Macintosh Operating Systems (MAC O/S), and independently managaement Microsoft SQL server, for an organization.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

    • Knowledge of enterprise applications systems such as Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) and Macintosh Operatingi Systems (MAC O/S) or equivalent systems.
    • Experience and ability to manage a budget, procurement of IT equipment and management of a medium to large sized office IT needs.
    • Experience and ability to independently provide effective Desktop Support to staff using a wide variety of operating systems and applications.
    • Experience and ability to plan, schedule and develop the annual budget for IT and the inventory and property system for all IT related equipment.
