This position will install, replace, and/or upgrade network equipment as part of a general network lifecycle plan at various university locations both on and off campus. Occasionally, this position will have projects where new installations are required.

University Information Technology, the central IT service provider for campus, reports to the Chief Information Officer and is responsible for many of the University of Utah’s most critical common IT resources including the campus network; the Campus Information Services ( CIS ) portal; UMail, telephone, and online collaboration services; high performance and research computing; information security; teaching and learning technologies; software licensing; and a host of other systems and applications. Responsibilities

• Install network equipment in a timely manner.

• Identify client network needs.

• Design, specify equipment, propose recommendations and then implement network solutions.

• Present the network requirements to the rest of the network engineering team.

• Implement changes in communication rooms to meet university standards as needed.

• Suggest changes to switch/router configurations as part of continual process improvement.

• As the Engineer in Charge ( EIC ) of various assigned projects, the engineer may need to coordinate with other university entities, including providing on-site direction for other network engineers.

• Collaborate with other team members and groups to identify and develop scalable network designs, solutions and recommendations.

• Troubleshoot and resolve wired and wireless network issues.

• Assist other network engineers with troubleshooting difficult or time-sensitive problems.

• Test and evaluate network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements.

• Prepare various documents such as work orders and purchase orders, record equipment in monitoring / inventory system; and prepare budget paperwork.

• Occasionally, assigned projects will require the engineer work outside of normal business hours.

• Participate in on-call rotation that will include evening and weekends.

• It is expected that the employee will actively continue network education including certifications.

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalency and 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within areas of specialty.

Preferences

• Network Certification such as CCNA , and / or CCDA .

• Able to climb a ladder, lift, stand, twist, and carry equipment up to 40 pounds, and occasionally lift and carry equipment that weigh up to 60 pounds.

• Occasionally will need to provide own transportation to various work sites.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Able to work with minimal supervision.

• Able to work concurrently on projects, trouble tickets and work orders.

• Must be results oriented.

• 0 to 2 years network experience.
