I.T. Assistants perform entry-level professional work in technology-related disciplines. While areas of specialization vary, typically I.T. Assistants work in areas such as development/programming, communications, technical support, or similar based on the needs of the Information Technology area to which they report. Work tasks include resolving minor technology problems, monitoring activities, and maintaining documentation. They have latitude for independent initiative and judgment, under supervision.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

The Baruch Computing and Technology Center (BCTC) provides access to information and communication technologies for students, faculty and staff throughout the Baruch community. Campus wide support of telephony, videoconferencing, computer networking communication systems, campus electronic mail, campus file servers, distance learning and media services equipment distribution are included in the services of the BCTC. The IT Assistant will be reporting to the Director of Enterprise Systems and Services and will be performing, but is not limited to, the responsibilities below:

  • Assist in installing, monitoring and maintaining all Test, Development and Production databases including but not limited to Oracle.

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of reporting databases as well as create new database users and tables as required.

  • Help install and upgrade database applications by applying patches and upgrades on a regular schedule. Provide technical support to the Web and Application teams.

  • Help troubleshoot, resolve, and communicate problems and failures with databases and related server applications to senior staff.

  • Keep up with changes in relational database management systems and practices, SQL programming, server operating systems and vendor supplied information systems for higher education.

  • Back up, recover, reorganize, and monitor performance and utilization of multiple types of databases, database structures, and database management systems.

  • Work closely with the lead Oracle Administrator as well as the Web and Application groups to assist with basic C# and PHP coding as needed.

  • Perform related duties and responsibilities with minimal supervision as directed by the supervisor and senior BCTC staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent

  • A minimum of six months of full-time experience in a computer or technology-related position. Experience that is more than 20 hours per week and less than 35 hours per week may be counted at 50% of the requirement (i.e., two months of part time experience equal to one month full time experience)

  • Additional experience and/or education that can be met by ONE of the following: An additional three years and six months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; an Associate’s degree plus 18 months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution

  • Demonstrated English Language proficiency

  • A Motor Vehicle Driver’s license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.

This title has three levels. To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, Associate’s Degree plus two years of experience with relational database technologies, or an Oracle Database Masters Certification plus one year of experience with relational database technologies

  • PL/SQL programming experience; experience in PeopleSoft (CUNYfirst) and/or higher education environment

  • Proficient in C# and familiarity with the .NET framework and strong understanding of object-oriented programming; familiarity with Microsoft SQL server

  • System administration experience in a Linux environment

  • Excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills

  • Strong decision-making skills, self-motivated and goal-oriented

COMPENSATION

New Hire: $24.90/hr* Incumbent: $28.12/hr *This amount reflects a 13% salary suppression in effect for the first 24 months of employment only.
