About the position:
We are seeking to fill an Application Developer position; this position will write, maintain, and improve code in GenTax by applying strong application development knowledge and skills in support of the Automated Tax and Licensing System (ATLAS) and related interfaces. This position performs specialized analysis of business, legislative, and technical requests, coordinates and implements ATLAS changes with other technical staff, and works closely with our business units to demonstrate prototypes and determine solutions.

What you bring (or want to develop):

  • A strong background in software development or a related discipline
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience working with a variety of development tools
  • Ability to conceptualize and communicate solutions
  • Think in non-linear terms
  • Experience in the following:

  • Object Oriented Programming such as:

  • Visual Basic
  • C#
  • Java
  • Ruby
  • SQL and Relational Databases
  • Layered Development Architecture
  • Experience with FAST Enterprise’s GenTax software will be beneficial.

    Our Application Developers will:

  • Use DOR and GenTax development tools and languages, such as VB.Net and SQL, to code and configure, test, stage, and implement changes in ATLAS.
  • Actively participate in gathering and discovering requirements for system changes.
  • Determine feasibility of recommended solutions, alternatives, and impacts of changes both to ATLAS and to the business units.
  • Follow DOR software development standards and project management methodologies.
  • For candidates with greater experience who possess strong leadership and communication skills, along with a desire to lead technical teams while continually building knowledge and experience, we may consider appointment as a Lead Application Developer. The Lead role goes beyond just solving business needs in ATLAS, with additional focus on building up and improving our development teams, and collaboration across units to solve complex problems.

    Our Lead Application Developers will also:

  • Assist development team members through mentoring, instruction, and assigning tasks that build knowledge and experience.
  • Review work assignments with and perform code reviews of changes by team members and peers.
  • Create or improve training or other materials for ongoing knowledge transfer. Deliver trainings for new developers and facilitate ongoing learning sessions across teams.
  • Work with leadership to assess skill gaps or other challenges and propose trainings, assignments or other solutions.

  • What does In-Training Look like:

    Starting from the Entry level, you will follow a detailed in-training plan to help you learn general and GenTax specific application development skills. This training plan will be tailored based on the experience you already have, and will last between 12-24 months.

    At the end of the in-training plan, you will advance to the Journey level and be able to complete work as an Application Developer with duties and responsibilities as defined above.

    Required Qualifications:
    A Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science or related field to information management with an emphasis in software development from an accredited institution whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or a foreign equivalent AND 1 years relevant experience.

    OR

    An Associate Degree or higher from an accredited institution whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or a foreign equivalent AND 2 years of relevant experience.

    OR

    Four (4) years of relevant, progressive development experience maintaining and enhancing complex software applications.

    Preference may be granted to applicants who possess experience with the following:

  • Supporting production systems
  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • Visual Basic .Net
  • FAST’s GenTax solution
