SUMMARY

The Healthcare Instructor facilitates meaningful learning of the course competencies in the curriculum and proactively supports all facets of the learning environment. The Healthcare Instructor is responsible for teaching various classes related to our healthcare programs, including but not limited to, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medical coding and billing, and chronic disease management. This position continuously works to ensure Summit’s mission to prepare students for living wage jobs through training, curriculum development and classroom management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Develops and designs curriculum specific to the core competencies of Summit Academy’s healthcare certificate programs.

2. Teaches students in a competency-based format through lectures, demonstration, and learning centered instruction.

3. Manages the learning environment through keeping accurate records, submitting grades and other reports on time, and enforcing school/campus academic and attendance policies.

4. Contributes to a learning culture by participating on curriculum and system task forces, supporting local campus events such as orientation and graduation and participating in various other workshops and meetings.

5. Teaches students how to look at prepared slides under a microscope and explain basic cell structure.

6. Plans appropriate differentiation strategies to address individual learning needs and styles of urban adult students.

7. Regularly assesses student learning by using multiple forms of assessment to determine grades in accordance with established standards and criteria.

8. Models learning and behavior consistent with expectations for students.

9. Teaches pro-social behavioral patterns conducive to success in the healthcare industry; for example: safety, health, ethics, employability and related skills.

10. Relates professional/life/industry experience to learning by the continuation of professional/technical skills development, the introduction of industry perspective into courses and the active awareness of professional/industry trends and opportunities.

11. Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medical coding and billing, HIPAA, and legal and ethical issues as they relate to the healthcare field
  • Ability to teach people of various abilities and diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Excellent communication skills: written, oral, interpersonal and presentation.
  • Strong decision making, problem solving, time management and stress management skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Minimum intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This job operates in a professional school setting which requires instructors to maintain professional appearance and attitude. The work environment is fast paced and requires time management and prioritization of job duties.

This job requires 75% time instructing and moving and 25% sitting and doing paperwork. Instructor should be able to lift up to 25lbs to move lab supplies, CPR equipment and files.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1. Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field.

2. 1-2 years teaching experience.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • A Master’s degree in a health related field
  • More than 2 years teaching experience
  • Experience with teaching adults
  • CPR and BLS trained instructor through the American Heart Association
