Information Technologist 2

It is the mission of the Ohio Public Defender to protect the rights of indigent persons throughout Ohio by providing quality representation and leadership in the criminal and juvenile justice systems.

The Ohio Public Defender’s Office is currently seeking a professional and motivated individual with good customer service skills for an Information Technologist 2 position. This position provides Primary Technology: Systems Administration (Hardware and Software) and Secondary Technology: IT Helpdesk Support. The duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide installation and monitoring support to internal and external users (e.g., unpack, stage and/or rack hardware)
  • Perform set-up and installation of hardware and/or software
  • Network connectivity, learn and change applications coding specifications, install telecommunications hardware and wiring
  • Respond to requests for technical assistance in person, via phone and electronically
  • Diagnose, analyze and resolve IT issues for internal and external customers across assigned multiple technology domains
  • Perform routine analysis to resolve problems on computer or telecommunication network for applications running in stand-alone, client/server, web based, and/or networked environments
  • If warranted, redirect or escalate problems per standard helpdesk procedures
  • Create, organize, file and maintain documentation
  • Respond to “production down” problems on a 24-hour basis
  • Maintain, monitor, and support agency computer network
  • Set up hardware (e.g., PCs, servers, routers, switches, CSU/DSUs, cards, cabling and hubs)
  • Maintain physical links to outside entities (e.g., DAS, NOC)
  • Implement and maintain global naming conventions (including active Directory) among multiple servers
  • Implement and maintain automated tape backup to maintain data integrity throughout network
  • Assist with review and revision of information technology disaster recovery plan (BRP – Business Recovery Plan)*
  • Install, monitor/maintain, configure and upgrade all dial-up and Wi-Fi connections
  • Install and test all software to ensure software is producing desired results
  • Where technical work requires specific knowledge to evaluate, select, adapt and modify standard procedures, devise new approaches to problems encountered
  • Act as Security Specialist – review and evaluate all hardware and software options and make purchase recommendations
  • Prepare reports for the Long Range and Information Technology Plans*
  • Promote system security and awareness by adhering to the Agency’s and/or State’s IT security policies and standards

Minimum Qualifications:
Education

Technical institute degree/certification in Computer Science or Information Systems or equivalent work experience.

AND

Experience

Minimum 18 months’ combined work experience in any combination of the following: computers and/or telecommunications software/hardware, applications, support products, projects or databases for small-scale systems or programs or pieces of larger systems or programs including 12 months’ related work experience as specified by the agency position description and vacancy/job posting.

Knowledge of: computers and electronics; oral and written communication tools and techniques; customer support and personal service; state and agency policies, procedures and applicable laws*; vision, mission and goals of agency*; telecommunications; IT security principles and methods; mathematic principles relative to assigned area in IT; safety practices; operating systems installation and configuration procedures; network standards, protocols and procedures; platform usage; capabilities and applications of network equipment including hubs, routers, switches, bridges, servers, and related hardware; technology design techniques; basic internet server maintenance techniques; back-up and recovery techniques; software distribution and configuration management tools and technical writing and documentation; technical writing and documentation practices; IT lifecycle concepts. Skill in: reading comprehension, speaking, service orientation, installation, troubleshooting, critical thinking, systems evaluation, and operation monitoring. Ability to: transport items up to 50 lbs.; calculate decimals, percentages and fractions; carry out instructions in written, oral or picture form; understand manuals and verbal instructions, technical in nature; stay abreast of current technologies in area of IT assigned; and deal with problems involving several variables in familiar context.

Working Conditions

Work involves operation of computer terminal for long periods of time; ability to stand, kneel, sit, and work in heights below the desk and lay on the floor, if needed. Selected candidate may be required to carry a cellular phone as assigned.

Work hours are generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., subject to necessary modification for emergencies, special projects and system maintenance or for travel. May be required to work evening or night shifts (variable starting and ending times, compressed work week, or other flexible hour concepts), may work weekends or holidays. May require travel within the state of Ohio; may require work at DRC or DYS facilities. Valid driver’s license is required.
