Incident Management Specialist

The Utah Department of Transportation has two openings on their Incident Management team. We are looking for well qualified, hard working individuals to fill our Incident Management Specialist (Roadway Safety Specialist I) vacancies.

Principal Duties:
Our Incident Management Specialists provide coverage of metro freeway sections for quick response in incident or accident clean-up/removal for restoration of efficient traffic flow resulting from stalled cars, accidents, hazardous materials, or other incidents impeding or interrupting traffic movement.

We also assist in providing effective methods of controlling traffic through work zones, providing traffic control to allow effective flow of traffic to protect emergency crews & the motoring public.

Incident Management Specialists are also responsible for coordinating with agencies and local governments involved with freeway operations to determine their concerns, requirements for safety and other needs in order to provide necessary services.

You will be required to attend trainings and received necessary certifications in traffic related procedures including defensive driving, detours and traffic control, first aid communications, dealing with hazardous materials, etc.

An Incident Management Specialist must be able to:
maintain composure and respond appropriately in stressful, emergency, volatile, or crisis situations.

communicate information and ideas clearly, and concisely, in writing; read and understand information presented in writing

operate radio dispatch equipment, CB radios or other emergency communication equipment

identify and apply appropriate safety intervention techniques

operate applicable safety equipment

On call required: This position requires 24-hour, 7-day-a-week availability, overtime, and varied work schedules including holidays and weekends depending on inclement weather, job assignment, and emergencies.

The Ideal Candidate:The best qualified candidate for this position will:
have a knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices of safety and risk management

a valid driver license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA53-3-202(1)(a)

be obtain a valid CDL license within 60 days of hire and be able to maintain valid license thereafter

be able to administer CPR

live within a 20 minute response time of the assigned Region Headquarters

High Risks: Incumbents will frequently be exposed to hazards and discomforts of traffic and environmental conditions due to the nature of the work assignment. Exposure to adverse, inclement, and varying weather conditions. Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment

Physical Requirements: Strenuous – The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, defending oneself and/or others against physical attack. Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader. This position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire.
