Human Factors Engineer (HFE) Intern

This position is a paid internship over the summer or semester with the potential to continue into full-time Human Factors Engineer/Cognitive Psychology Intern HP is looking for a full-time associate to join us in Boise, Idaho. As part of the Global Experience Design team, you will be responsible for helping define new product and service concepts that will realize HP’s vision for the Future of Work. We have: Massive impact: as the #1 market leader for PCs, HP has resources and reach to scale Global perspective: >70% of HP’s business is outside the U.S., and the Future of Work is truly a global opportunity This position is a paid internship over a summer or semester with the potential to continue into full-time You should be: Pursuing a PhD or Master’s in Cognitive Psychology, Human Factors, HCI, Experience Design, Ergonomics, Applied Psychology, Anthropology, Human Systems Engineering or related degree, or MA/MS in these areas with prior related industry research experience Talented and self-motivated individual to work closely with fellow Research & Insight leads across multiple businesses and multiple types of interfaces (hardware, software, mobile, web) Responsibilities/Tasks/Projects Apply your knowledge of human factors theory, principles, methods, and tools to identify, plan, and conduct human factors activities across the product life cycle of innovative, next-generation products. Working under minimal supervision, independently plan, schedule, conduct and coordinate human factors activities. Perform human factors analysis activities, including, developing user profiles, identifying user needs, analyzing user tasks, and identifying and managing use-related risk. Participate in research projects across both foundational as well as evaluative methodologies Collect and analyze user behavior data through a variety of ways including user testing, observation, surveys, A/B testing, meta-analysis, etc.

Assist in the design, fielding, analysis, and reporting of primary research studies across both in-person and remote testing methods Participate in methodology discussions with fellow researchers Assist in screener and script development as well as session moderation Participate across all aspects of synthesis including insight generation Assist in delivery of crisp and actionable reports/recommendations, etc. Work cross-functionally with Design, Marketing, and Engineering to incorporate user-centered research across all stages of product development Assist Insights leads with day-to-day work as needed Plan and conduct formative usability evaluations and summative validation tests, analyze data, document results, and present recommendations to product teams. Create documentation related to human factors activities needed for regulatory compliance. Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, including engineering, marketing, regulatory, and clinical areas.

Direct and mentor junior staff members and contractors. Actively contribute ideas for improvement and collaboration. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Human Factors or related discipline with coursework in Human Factors. In route towards a Master’s or Ph.D degree in Human Factors Preferred Human factors experience in the printing industry preferred.

Deep understanding of human factors regulatory standards related to 501 preferred. Solid understanding of the theories, principles, and data associated with human performance capabilities and limitations (perceptual, cognitive, motor, biomechanical, and anthropometric). Ability to self-motivate and self-manage. Ability to apply human factors principles and methods to the design, definition, evaluation, launch, and use of medical devices.

Ability to direct and mentor junior staff and contractors. Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills. Ability to plan and conduct effective meetings and presentations. Ability to collaborate effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.

High level of empathy for users that is translated into a human-centered approach. Passion for user driven research and insights a must.
