Health Information Specialist

Please Note: In order to be considered for this position, you must be able to obtain an SF86 Position of Trust which is only available to U.S. Citizens. Our Facilities Security Officer will initiate this process post-offer acceptance. Failure to obtain this will result in termination from this role.

The Health Information Specialist will be responsible for reviewing Service member’s medical record (both electronic and paper). This includes reviewing past and present limited duty determinations and profiles, Veterans Affairs disability rating, care provided outside the Military Health System since the Service member’s last PHA and their PHA self-assessment responses. The Health Information Specialist will summarize, comment, and document discrepancies and recommendations for our practitioner network.

This position is a part time position. Employees in this position will average 20 to 34 hours a week. Workdays are Monday- Sunday (Weekends will be required). Employees are required to have flexibility to work any of our 8 to 12 hour shift schedules during our normal business hours of 6:00am to 10:00pm.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret health record documentation to identify all diagnoses and procedures
  • Assesses the adequacy of health record documentation to ensure that it supports all diagnoses and procedures
  • Applies knowledge of anatomy and physiology, clinical disease processes, pharmacology, and diagnostic and procedural terminology
  • Identify health issues that require immediate attention
  • Comply with timely completion requirements of examination reviews for a wide range of health records
  • Recognize and identify discrepancies in health history records and files and determine their relevancy and importance for inclusion in a health record summary
  • Respond to requests in a timely manner
  • Handle interruptions in a skillful way
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor
  • Strive to prevent/resolve customer concerns to the customer’s satisfaction
  • Willingness to work special projects as directed


Required Qualifications

  • An education level of at least a high school diploma or GED
  • 2 years of post-secondary education in a medical program OR 2 years’ experience in a medical field
  • Equivalent combination of education, experience and/or applicable military experience will be considered
  • Basic proficiency with MS Word
  • Basic proficiency with MS Excel
  • United States Citizenship
  • Ability to obtain favorable adjudication following submission of Defense Health Agency eQuip Form SF86
  • Ability to obtain the CAC (Common Access Card)
  • Ability to obtain the DEE (Defense Enterprise Email)



Preferred Qualifications

  • Data entry experience
  • Customer Service experience
  • Familiarity with a variety of military and veteran health and readiness assessments
  • ICD10-CM and/or CPT coding experience


Soft Skills

  • Must be able to perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy
  • Must possess good written communication skills with the ability to compile and type summaries of medical record content
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team and must be able to problem solve and propose solutions in a fast paced environment


Telecommuting Requirements
  • Required to have a dedicated work area established that is separated from other living areas
  • Required to have a work area in a section of the residence that provides information privacy
  • Required to keep all Company sensitive documents secure
  • Required to have lockable drawers for the securing of confidential information
  • Must live in a location that can receive a UnitedHealth Group approved high-speed internet connection or leverage an existing high-speed internet service
