Job Description

TITLE: Health Clerk

REPORTS TO: The school nurse and the school principal in the building assigned.

JOB GOAL: Assist the school nurse in carrying on the school health program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Give minor first aid and see students with complaints of illness.

2. Report by telephone unusual symptoms of students to school nurse and seek direction as necessary.

3. Notify parents of a student’s symptoms of illness and if necessary, stay with the student until the parent arrives.

4. Notify the Principal, if requested, before a student is sent home.

5. Keep a clinic log on all students seen and record care given.

6. Advise the nurse of possible communicable disease.

7. Maintain a school folder and keep it current.

8. The Health Clerk may also assist the Nurse with the following:

a. Assist the nurse in planning and implementing the vision testing program. Do screening, rechecks, write up referrals and send letters home, as instructed by the nurse.

b. Assist the nurse in planning and implementing the hearing screening program. Do screening, rechecks, and thresholds, writing up referrals and sending letters home, as instructed by the nurse.

c. Check immunization certificates, do immunization audits, compile statistics, contact parents, and do follow-up as assigned by nurse.

d. Help with health programs, such as dental health, as instructed by the nurse.

e. Record health data on individual student health records and the computer.

f. Prepare annual school health statistics and other forms as indicated by the nurse.

h. Obtain health education materials such as films, pamphlets, booklets, models, etc.

9. Regular attendance required.

The health clerk may not:
1. Accept responsibility for serious accidents or emergencies.

2. Discuss confidential information regarding students. All such information is the responsibility of the nurse.

3. Give or recommend medication of any kind, except as directed by the nurse.

4. Offer diagnosis or medical opinions of any kind.

5. Contact student’s physicians.

6. Contact parents regarding prolonged chronic absences.

7. Provide Health Education Programs, except as directed by nurse.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 7 hours/day, 9 months/year (benefits-eligible)

SALARY: $9.90/hour

EVALUATION: Building Principal and the School Health Nurse Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Recent Red Cross standard First Aid Course.

3. Current CPR Training/AED.

4. Enjoys working with children, accept and follow orders, and a strict understanding for handling confidential health school records and information.

5. Basic computer data entry.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

2. Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

3. Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.

4. Hearing: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.

5. Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Work involves sitting most of the time.

6. Visual Acuity–Clerical, Administrative: Work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal reading, visual inspection involving small details, using measurement devices at distances close to the eyes.

7. The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
